Ahead of floor test, here are all the scenarios on who will form the next government in Karnataka

Following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of  Congress-JD (S) plea challenging the appointment of BJP MLA KG Bopaiah as pro-tem speaker, all the focus now remains on who will win the crucial floor test to be held in Karnataka Vidhana Soudha at 4pm on Saturday.

Even as both the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress have been claiming to have the magic number, here are all the scenarios on who could form government in Karnataka:

• SCENARIO 1:

78 CONG +  37 JDS +  1 BSP + 2  INDEPENDENT = 118

The scenario would slate a win for Congress-JD(S) win (MAGIC MARK: 111)

• SCENARIO 2:

103 BJP +  8 CROSS = 111

If this scenario holds true, BJP would emerge victorious (MAGIC MARK: 111)

• SCENARIO 3: 

103 BJP +  8 ABSTAIN  = BJP fails /Congress+JDS WIN 

(MAGIC MARK: 107)

• SCENARIO 4:

103 BJP + 2 INDEPENDENTS + 6 ABSTAIN +  4 CROSS = 109, resulting in BJP victory

(MAGIC MARK: 108)

• SCENARIO 5:

103 BJP + 2 INDEPENDENTS + 7 ABSTAIN +  4 CROSS = 109, again resulting in BJP victory

• SCENARIO 6:

103 BJP + 5 ABSTAIN +  5  CROSS =  108

This scenario would result in a tie, putting the onus on the pro-tem speaker to decide on who forms the government.

Earlier on Saturday, in a massive setback to the Congress party and Janata Dal (Secular), the Supreme Court has rejected the Congress' plea challenging the appointment of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA KG Bopaiah as the pro tem speaker and has ordered that he will head over the crucial floor test. During the hearing Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta said the speaker has taken a decision that the proceedings on the floor will be live telecasted on local channels, to which Justice AK Sikri observed that it resolves the entire issue.

In a dramatic hearing on Friday, the Supreme Court had ordered a floor test, to be held on Saturday in Karnataka Vidhana Soudha at 4pm, asking concerned parties to prove their majority in the floor of the House to stake claim to the Karnataka government. During the hearing as the Congress and JD(S) agreed to the floor test, the BJP had argued for more time and had also asked for a secret ballot. However, the apex court declined both the requests made by the BJP.
