Establishing Tata Motors in India:
Ratan Tata established Tata Motors, during his tenure as a Chairman of Tata Sons in India. Later, it became one of the biggest auto manufacturers, not just in India but abroad. It became one of the key players in the passenger vehicle segment in India.
Launching India’s first Indigenous car:
India’s first indigenously developed car, Tata Indica was launched in 1998 and it was the brainchild of Ratan Tata. He wanted Indica to be designed and developed according to the needs of Indian consumers, focusing on comfort, fuel efficiency, and reliability.
Introducing India’s most affordable car:
With a vision of giving a safe, reliable, and practical four-wheeler solution to Indians, Ratan Tata introduced the Nano in 2008 at the Auto Expo. Tata Nano was priced at Rs 1 lakh, and pitching it as a cost-effective and feature-rich compact car.
Acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford:
Under the leadership of Ratan Tata, Tata Motors acquired the iconic British luxury automakers, Jaguar and Land Rover. This acquisition from Ford for $2.3 billion expanded Tata Motors beyond India’s domestic market and the company forayed into the premium and luxury segment of vehicles.
Introduction to the Automotive Hall of Fame:
Following the acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover, the esteemed 2015 Automotive Hall of Fame inducted Ratan Tata. The leaders from Indian businesses joined legends from the automotive industry such as Luca Di Montezemolo, former chairman of Ferrari, and Roger Penske, founder, and chairman of Penske Corporation, in receiving the honour.
