Telangana Announces 100% Exemption On Road Tax, Registration Fees For Electric Vehicles

RTO Waiver For EVs in Telangana: Telangana government has declared a 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles (EVs). This exemption on the taxes will apply to all the vehicles, that are purchased and registered in the state for an initial period of two years. This exemption will be applicable until December 31, 2026.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar expressed that the new policy for electric vehicles will take effect on Monday (November 18) under Government Order (GO) 41. This policy for electric vehicles is aimed at making Hyderabad pollution-free. This move from the Telangana government is expected to boost the sales of electric vehicles in the state.
What is the Government Order?
According to the Government Order, the state government decided to provide a 100 per cent exemption from the registration fees and road tax for electric vehicles.
Which categories of electric vehicles will be covered under GO?
The GO will apply to electric two-wheelers, electric four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles such as taxis, private cars, electric three-seater auto-rickshaws, electric light goods carriers, including three-wheeled goods vehicles, electric tractors, and electric buses.
In respect of electric buses, the exemption from the road tax and the registration fees will apply for the entire life of the electric vehicles, which are operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation only. The GO also highlighted that the buses owned by any industry to transport their employees exclusively and that are not used for commercial purposes, purchased and registered in Telangana for the initial period of two years up to December 31, 2026, will be exempted from the road tax and registration fees irrespective of the number of vehicles registered.
Besides this, the electric vehicle charging stations and the infrastructure developers are also expected to see some movement from the government to enhance the electric vehicle industry in India.
