Volkswagen adds 1.6-litre diesel engine to the T-Roc. Will be placed below the 2.0-litre diesel engine

Volkswagen's T-Roc range has got its fifth engine. And this time, it's a 1.6-litre turbo diesel. 

Sporting this engine, the SUV will churn out 113 bhp of power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It is placed in a sweet spot in the Volkswagen lineup below its other diesel option of a 2.0-litre TDI capable of producing 148 bhp. However, unlike the 2-litre variant which is an all-wheel drive, the new engine will supply all its power to the front wheel. 

The 1.6-litre engine passed the latest Worldwide Harmonized Light vehicles Test (WLTP) emission standard test with a rating of 115g/km. 

Apart from the diesel variants. The SUV is also available in three turbo petrol engines with capacities of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0-litres. 

With the new engine, the T-Roc will lock horns with the SUVs such as Nissan Juke which have similar displacements. T-Roc's new engine is well-used in Volkswagen's line up in cars like Golf and Touran. 

The new engine will be offered across all the trims of the SUV which includes the S, SE, Desi, n, SEL, and R-Line. Out of this, the most basic trim i.e. the S, gets a standard kit which includes an eight-inch colour touchscreen with a digital radio, Bluetooth, climate control, LED daytime running lights and an autonomous emergency braking system. However, the top-spec R-trim is likely to have a sporty styling and 19-inch alloy wheels. 

The 1.6-litre T-Roc has already hit the markets with a price tag that ranges from 21,290 pounds for the basic S-trim to 27,010 pounds for the top-spec R-trim. This model is 2,335 pound more than the 1.0-litre entry-level petrol model that produces the same 113 bhp of power with a higher torque of 200 Nm. 

This news comes a few days after the Volkswagen's next SUV in India, the T-Cross was spotted testing. While the T-Roc is based on the the German carmaker's sporty hatchback Golf, the T-Cross is based on Golf's younger sibling Polo reflecting the same mentioned changes. The T-Cross will be about eight inches smaller than the T-Roc. Driving modes on the T-Cross that would enter the Indian market is, however, not clear yet. With the flexible MQB-A0 platform, the T-Cross will have the option of various engines, at least in the international markets.
