CAPF instructed to switch from WhatsApp to 'Sandes App' for data security in official communications

New Delhi: The paramilitary, with a strong focus on data security and ensuring the confidentiality of all communications, is poised to shift entirely to the 'Sandes App' for official correspondence and document sharing. According to reports, this transition is scheduled to commence in the first week of January.

A high-ranking official familiar with the development disclosed that a directive has been issued for all paramilitary units to migrate their official communications and document exchanges to the 'Sandes App.' This decision stems from the critical need for heightened data security, particularly in an era where safeguarding information integrity holds paramount importance.

"The popularity of WhatsApp among security forces for internal communication was notable for its quick and efficient messaging. However, in the current scenario, where data safety is of utmost importance, especially concerning document sharing via messaging apps, the decision has been made to transition to the 'Sandes App,' designed and developed in India," stated the official.

Internal communications have instructed personnel to download the new messaging application and familiarise themselves with its functionalities within a week. This shift mandates a move away from platforms like WhatsApp and other similar messaging apps to the 'Sandes App' for all official communications within these forces.

Addressing the readiness of the app, another officer mentioned that following a trial phase, various glitches have been rectified, ensuring an updated version ready for deployment.

"We have recommended the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to switch to the new app for all official communication and document sharing. The app does not share data with third parties, and data safety is one of its key features," confirmed the officer.

The 'Sandes' mobile application, conceptualised and developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), was initially launched in March 2021. Subsequent updates have fortified the platform's security measures. Available on Android, iOS, and with a desktop version, the app has garnered over a million downloads.

Furthermore, officials highlight that this indigenous instant messaging platform, 'Sandes,' operates exclusively on government infrastructure, facilitating secure communication within governmental organisations. It boasts features such as end-to-end encryption, encrypted backup, and encrypted OTP services, akin to other messaging platforms. Its privacy policies strictly adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the Government of India.

Moreover, Sandes can integrate with other government communication systems, enabling encrypted messaging at zero cost. Presently, it stands integrated with NIC email, DigiLocker, and e-office, according to sources.

However, access to the app's complete functionalities is presently restricted to government-verified users. Employees of government organisations must undergo verification through their Ministry/Department's Nodal officer to gain access.
