Marine Corps Modernizes with New Radar Technologies and Expanded Counter-Drone Portfolio

The US Marine Corps is advancing its capabilities with the development of new radars and counter-drone systems.

California: Amidst efforts to modernize, US Marine Corps is bolstering its capabilities through development of new rars and innovative counter-drone systems. Spearheed by Program Executive Office Land Systems, Marine Corps aims to optimize existing technology while rapidly fielding new systems to fortify its portfolio.  

In a bid to enhance its expeditionary rars program, Marine Corps is expanding beyond Ground/Air Task Oriented Rar (G/ATOR). Chief Stephen Bowdren revealed plans for a passive rar, complementing active G/ATOR, crucial for future warfare scenarios such as expeditionary vanced base operations. Corps is integrating an Army passive rar proto to create Multi-Domain Rar for a Contested Environment (MuDRaCE) system and Medium-Range Air Defense Rar (MARAUDER) to be deployed expeditiously.

Countering Drone Threats  

ground-based air defence portfolio is making significant strides, with operational assessments of Medium-Range Intercept Capability underway. Bowdren emphasized imminent completion of operational tests for both light and regular versions of Marine Air Defense Integrated System, slated for fielding within next 12 to 18 months. program's agile approach, integrating existing sensors and technology, underscores Marine Corps' commitment to swiftly countering drone threats.

Amidst evolving reconnaissance needs, US Marine Corps navigates a transformation in its light armoured vehicle portfolio, particularly vanced Reconnaissance Vehicle (ARV). As Corps reevaluates its reconnaissance mission, discussions centre on a blend of manned and unmanned vehicles across diverse terrains.

future of reconnaissance hinges on a spectrum of programs and equipment, with ARV poised as a linchpin within suite of systems. Marine Corps explores synergy between ARV and a range of assets, including Ultra Light Tactical Vehicles, surface craft, and aerial systems. Bowdren highlighted ongoing experimentation to delineate optimal configuration for meeting reconnaissance objectives.  

Marine Corps is actively collaborating with industry to vance ARV-30 protos, featuring a 30mm cannon akin to that on Amphibious Combat Vehicle. With a focus on agility, Corps remains committed to ARV family of vehicles, despite procurement timelines remaining fluid. Bowdren affirmed office's determination to drive progress within available resources, ensuring reiness for future operational demands.
