UK hands over Sandown-class Minehunters to Boost Ukraine's naval strength amid war with Russia

In a strategic move, the United Kingdom has officially transferred two Sandown-class minehunter ships to Ukraine as part of a new Maritime Capability Coalition, a collaborative effort led by Britain and Norway. The coalition aims to provide enduring military support, reinforcing security in the Black Sea, particularly amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the procurement of these Royal Navy vessels by Ukraine, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing Ukraine's maritime capabilities.

The recent transfer of two Sandown-class minehunters is a pivotal step in the broader Maritime Capability Coalition initiative, primarily focused on bolstering security in the Black Sea region. As Ukraine has targeted Russia's Black Sea Fleet during the conflict, the coalition seeks to provide long-term military support to enhance Ukraine's naval strength. The move underscores the significance of maritime operations in the ongoing geopolitical landscape, especially after nearly two years of war. 

Sandown-Class Minehunters to be key assets for Ukraine 

The Sandown-class minehunters, a class of fifteen vessels built primarily for the Royal Navy, have been deployed to aid the Ukrainian Navy. These vessels, known for their effectiveness in mine countermeasures, also serve with the Royal Saudi Navy, the Estonian Navy, and now, the Ukrainian Navy. The deployment of these minehunters is part of a broader effort to strengthen Ukraine's maritime capabilities and secure vital sea routes.

As single-role mine hunters (SRMH), the Sandown-class vessels play a crucial role in detecting and neutralizing mines, contributing to the safety of sea navigation. The strategic decision to transfer these vessels aligns with the Maritime Capability Coalition's goal of providing Ukraine with essential capabilities to save lives at sea and open up vital export routes. 

Pre-Invasion deal and ongoing support  

The agreement for the transfer of the two minehunters was made between the UK and Ukraine in June 2021, preceding Russia's full-scale invasion. Ukrainian soldiers have undergone training on these vessels since last year. Additionally, the UK has played a significant role in providing military training courses to approximately 20,000 Ukrainians over the past year, solidifying its position as the second-largest provider of military aid to Ukraine after the US. 

The procurement of the Sandown-class mine countermeasures vessels by Ukraine through UK Export Finance reflects a collaborative effort to strengthen Ukraine's naval capabilities, contributing to regional security amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions. 

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps highlighted the significance of the minehunters, emphasizing the UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine. The collaboration between the UK, Norway, and other allies aims to ensure a sustained military commitment to enhance Ukraine's maritime capabilities over the long term. The coalition's multifaceted approach includes expanding the Ukrainian navy's forces, developing a Ukrainian Marine Corps, and enhancing the use of river patrol craft to defend inland and coastal waterways.
