How Cpl Jyoti Prakash Nirala’s Valor Made Him India’s Only Airman to Earn the Ashok Chakra

New Delhi, India – In quiet village of Blih, located in heart of Bihar’s Rohtas district, Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala was born on November 15, 1986. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of most courageous members of Indian Air Force is a testament to his unflinching commitment to duty and nation.

Coming from a modest civilian background, Nirala’s determination to serve his nation was evident from a young age. In 2005, he joined Indian Air Force, beginning a 12-year journey that would see him serve in various bases across India. His exceptional service record and commitment led him to elite Garud Commando Force, a specially trained unit tasked with protecting Air Force bases, conducting rescue operations, and handling high-risk situations in hostile environments.  

Making of a Commando: Training and Selection  

Garud Commando Force, formed in 2004, is named after Hindu God Garud, symbolizing strength, courage, and resilience. This unit is known for its rigorous selection and training process, demanding both physical and mental fortitude. Garud Commandos play a crucial role in airbase security, special reconnaissance, and rescuing downed pilots in dangerous territories. force’s unique structure ensures that its personnel remain committed to ir specialized roles throughout ir career, regardless of ir posting within IAF.

selection process for Garud Commandos is highly competitive, with candidates recruited directly through airmen selection centres. Aspiring candidates must undergo strenuous physical training, mental resilience exercises, and specialized skills development. training is designed to prepare m for challenges of commando operations, including combat in remote and hostile areas.  

Corporal Nirala’s determination to join elite ranks of Garud Commandos exemplified his commitment to serving nation. After successfully completing gruelling training, he was absorbed into force, where he displayed exceptional leership, courage, and skill.  

Bandipora Operation: November 18, 2017  

Corporal Nirala’s most defining moment came during a joint operation between Garud Force and 13th Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, on November 18, 2017. Intelligence sources h indicated presence of terrorists in Chanderger village, and security forces decided to launch a mission to neutralize threat.  

Corporal Nirala’s detachment approached designated area with utmost stealth, setting up a close-quarter ambush around terrorists’ suspected hideout. Armed with a light machine gun, Nirala took up a position that strategically cut off all escape routes for terrorists. As expected, terrorists attempted to flee, triggering a violent confrontation. 

Amidst chaos, terrorists threw grenes and fired in an effort to escape. However, Nirala’s unparalleled courage shone through. Despite facing heavy gunfire, he engaged militants, eliminating two category ‘A’ terrorists and injuring two ors. His relentless fighting spirit continued even after he was critically injured by a volley of small arms fire. Tragically, Nirala succumbed to his injuries, but not before ensuring elimination of all six ilitants involved in operation.  

One of militants killed during encounter was later identified as nephew of Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, key planner of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. This me operation not just a tactical success, but a significant blow to terrorism in region.  

Honoring a Hero: Ashoka Chakra

For his extraordinary bravery, leership, and sacrifice during Bandipora operation, Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala was posthumously awarded Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on January 26, 2018. honour was a fitting recognition of his raw courage and supreme sacrifice in line of duty. 

Corporal Nirala is survived by his wife, Sushma Nand, his daughter, Jigyasa Kumari, and his mor, Malti Devi. His sacrifice has left a void in ir lives, but his legacy lives on as a symbol of valour and patriotism. Nirala’s indomitable spirit continues to inspire generations, reminding us all of selfless dedication and courage displayed by men and women who serve in Indian Armed Forces.
