Strategic Imperatives for India

At heart of Chushul's strategic importance is its airstrip, a vital lifeline that played a crucial role even during 1962 Sino-Indian War. region’s location and terrain make it a critical centre for logistics deployment, enabling rapid movement of mechanized forces, including tanks, across its plains. Its connectivity to Leh via ro furr enhances its operational value, making it a focal point in India's defence strategy along LAC.

Chushul is one of five Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) points where Indian Army and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China engage in dialogue. However, its significance extends far beyond se meetings. Indian troops, having secured ridgeline in this sub-sector, now hold a commanding position that allows m to dominate Chushul bowl on Indian side and Moldo sector on Chinese side. This vantage point also provides a clear line of sight over nearly 2-kilometer-wide Spanggur Gap, a strategic corridor that Chinese have previously used to launch assaults, including during 1962 war.

For India, maintaining control over Chushul is not merely about holding territory; it is about securing a gateway to Leh, heart of Lakh. Should China gain control over Chushul, it would have a direct route to launch operations against Leh, a scenario that poses a significant threat to India's territorial integrity in region.

China's Interest in Chushul

strategic value of Chushul is not lost on China. PLA views sector as a critical point of ingress into Leh. During 1962 conflict, after initial attacks in Galwan Valley, PLA prepared to vance on Chushul airfield and valley to gain direct access to Leh. However, timely reinforcement of area by Indian Army's 114 Brige in November 1962, bolstered by two troops of armour and artillery, thwarted se plans, securing region for India.

Chushul sector presents a host of challenges, both immediate and long-term. proximity of Indian and Chinese troops, sometimes within a distance of just 800 to 1,000 meters at points like Black Top and Reqin La, creates a volatile situation where any miscalculation could le to a flare-up. harsh environment compounds se challenges. Winters in Chushul last for eight months of year, with temperatures plummeting to minus 30 degrees Celsius. Frequent snowstorms and difficulty of digging in and constructing shelters on ridgeline furr complicate task of maintaining a defensive posture.

Logistics in such an inhospitable terrain is anor major challenge. Supplying water, food, and or essentials to troops stationed at se high-altitude positions is a continuous struggle, requiring ingenuity and relentless effort.
