HRD Ministry renamed Ministry of Education as Cabinet approves National Education Policy

In a major Cabinet decision on Wednesday, the National Education Policy has been approved. Following this, the HRD Minisry will be renamed as Education Ministry

In a major Cabinet decision on Wednesday, National Education Policy (NEP) has been approved. Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and I&B Minister Prakash Javekar will brief media at 4 pm and elaborate on  development. A committee led by Chairman Dr K Kasturirangan formed  Draft National Education Policy 2019 on foundational pillars of 'Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability.'

While NEP enviss restructuring  Indian education system, one of its major decision is to rename HRD ministry as Ministry of Education (MoE). committee heed by Kasturirangan is of opinion that step will bring focus back on education and learning.

new education policy will create an independent regulatory body called State School Regulatory Authority. NEP aims to provide pre-primary education to all by 2025. It aims at compulsory school education for all children in group of 3-18 years by 2030. It proposes new curricular with 5+3+3+4 structure. It continues with three-langu formula and ds " Langus of India" with an aim to preserve all local langus.

Uproar over Hindi imposition

Earlier when Draft NEP was released, Opposition in sourn states targeted  Centre claiming that central government is imposing Hindi langu on states. Soon after, new policy was revised with mention of Hindi as a compulsory langu in three-langu formula and stating that 'students free to choose any langu y want'.

NEP 2019 released highlighted that three-langu formula 'must be better implemented in certain States, particularly Hindi speaking States; for purposes of national integration' and because it would 'help raise status of all Indian langus'. It ded a point called 'flexibility in  three-langu formula' stating that 'students who wish to change one or more of three langus y are studying may do so in Gre 6 or Gre 7, so long as y are able to still demonstrate proficiency in three langus', revising its previous take that Hindi will be third langu in n-Hindi speaking states under trilingual policy.
