New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the results of the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduates (CUET-UG) 2024 on Sunday, July 28. However, the release of the results has sparked a wave of concerns and complaints among candidates, primarily due to the absence of ranks, percentile scores and normalization of marks.

CUET candidates have raised questions about the scorecards issued this year, which only display the raw scores obtained without mentioning percentiles or ranks. The lack of normalization, a method previously employed to ensure fairness across multiple test sessions, has also been a point of contention. Many candidates have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction, alleging discrepancies between their calculated scores and the marks reflected in the official scorecards.

Discrepancies in CUET-UG results

One candidate, posting on the social media platform X, claimed that based on the final answer key, she should have scored 450 marks, but her scorecard showed only 263 marks. Another candidate echoed similar concerns, stating that the scores they calculated from the final answer key did not match those in their official scorecard.

In response to the growing unrest, candidates have been tagging NTA, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Ministry of Education on social media, seeking explanations and corrections.

The National Testing Agency conducted the Common University Entrance Test (UG) – 2024 in Hybrid Mode for about 14,99,790 (Fourteen Lacs, ninety-nine thousand, seven hundred and ninety) unique registered candidates. These candidates applied for various combinations of subjects across 283 Central, State, and other participating universities / Institutions / Organizations for the Academic session 2024-2025 at various Examination Centres located in different cities across India and abroad.

Normalisation of Marks Not Needed: NTA

Moreover, the lack of normalization, a method previously employed to ensure fairness across multiple test sessions, has also been a point of contention. However, as per the information , NTA had said that as the exam will be held in a single shift for each subject, the need for normalisation will not exist.

“The NTA is planning to do the CUET (UG) 2024 examination in a single shift for each language/subject/General Test, so that the need for Normalization will not exist. However, under unavoidable circumstances, if any subject is conducted in multi-shifts, then normalization will be done. The performance of every candidate will be evaluated using the equi-percentile method wherein normalized marks of each candidate will be calculated using the percentiles of each group of students in a given shift across multiple days for the same subject,” the information bulletin read.

The raw score of each candidate in each subject will be normalized using the Equi-percentile method. This is done separately for each subject for which the examination is held in multiple shifts. For each subject for which the examination is held in multiple shifts, the raw score for each candidate appearing for the subject will be converted into NTA Score (Percentile Score & Normalized Score) in the following three steps.

How To Raise Grievances

The NTA, in its official notice, acknowledged the concerns and provided a grievance redressal mechanism. The notice stated that any candidate facing issues with their result could register their grievances within 24 hours by emailing rescuetug@nta.ac.in with their application number, candidate name, and subject code/subject name, along with the day and date of examination. For further clarification related to CUET-UG 2024, candidates can also contact the helpline at 011-40759000.

This year's CUET-UG, which serves as the gateway to undergraduate courses across 283 universities in India, saw significant changes in its scoring system. The NTA decided not to use the normalization method for the first time, as all exams were conducted in a single shift. This decision has evidently led to confusion and dissatisfaction among the aspirants.
