New Delhi: Delhi Minister Atishi announced on Wednesday that the Delhi government will introduce legislation to regulate coaching centres. This decision follows a tragic incident involving the death of UPSC aspirants, attributed to severe waterlogging caused by encroachments on drainage systems by coaching centres.
During a press conference, Atishi revealed that many coaching centres had illegally encroached on the drainage area, preventing water from flowing properly and causing hazardous waterlogging. She also noted that the operation of coaching centres in basements, where libraries were established, was entirely illegal.

"An interim inquiry report and a preliminary report from the MCD have brought to light two critical issues: the encroachment on the drain by coaching centres leading to waterlogging, and the illegal operation of coaching centres in basements," Atishi stated.
As a result of the findings, actions have been taken against responsible officials. The Junior Engineer tasked with overseeing the drain and preventing encroachments has been permanently terminated, while the Assistant Engineer has been suspended.

Furthermore, Atishi assured that the magisterial report, due in six days, will lead to strict actions against those found culpable. Illegal encroachments by coaching centres have already been bulldozed, and steps are being taken against those running illegal basement classes and libraries.
