Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Udaipur has decided to implement the 10% quota of seat reservation for students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) as announced by the NDA government. The quota will be implemented in the forthcoming 2020-21 session.
10% EWS quota to be implemented
Speaking to a news agency, Pankaj Patel, Chairman, IIM Udaipur said, “We have already implemented 5 per cent quota in 2019-20 session. However, as the announcement came a little late when we have had already started with admissions, we have decided to start the 10 per cent EWS quota from the coming academic session of 2020-21.”
Many IIMs have been silent on the issue of the NDA government’s scheme of introducing 10% quota for EWS students. The additional 10% will result in increasing the student strength in these institutes which will challenge the student-faculty ratio. Pankaj Patel added that several alumni from other IIMs including Harsha Bhogle have joined the board and together they have attained important milestones while moving forward. He also added that all the board members of the IIM are pioneers in the industry and are bringing in a practicable course which will make a difference.
Difficult to escape from the economic slowdown
When questioned whether the economic slowdown is an issue of worry when it comes to placement, he responded by saying that it is true that the institution cannot be insulated from the downturn impact. Adding that the schools focusing on new-age digital companies and focusing on leadership capabilities are less likely to be affected but there is no way to escape from the impact of the economy. He pointed out that there are organisations which use the shutdown as an opportunity to build capability. Sensing that this is a bliss downturn, he thinks that it won’t be affecting those schools which are preparing managers for the future. However, he said that if there is a long spell then definitely there will be worry, but he was being hopeful of the best times in the future as the government is taking steps.
