UGC News: Read on to understand what has happened in the Supreme Court hearing of UGC’s stand to conduct the exams for final year students of various varsities.

Supreme Court is resuming hearing of UGC’s stand to conduct all final year exams eir online or offline across multiple varsities in country. hearing’s final verdict would be out soon. Several pleas have been filed from varsities, student associations and select parents against University Grants Commission’s stand on conducting of exams.

This year, due to coronavirus pandemic, UGC had suggested alternate ways to conduct eir online exams or conduct exams in a social-distancing suitable manner, following protocols set by government. However many varsities in metropolitan cities like Mumbai have been unable to conduct exams due to alarming number of cases. UGC will give its stand on matter today during ongoing hearing. On or side is student bodies of Law students, Yuva Sena and or groups who have filed pleas to t conduct exams.

National Disaster Manment Act applies to everything in and around district according to Abhishek Singhvi, a member of parliament. He is of opinion that as per stand of Ministry of Home Affairs, institutions of state under health threat were kept closed for a period of five months and in se circumstances, exams cant be conducted without formal teaching.

However, UGC has been firm on opinion that Universities were given time to prepare for an online mode, even when classroom teaching was t possible. All of subjects that were left to be taught were urged to be taught online as per official tifications revealed in April buy UGC. A tification dated in May also gave brief guidelines on conducting exams, online or offline or even Open Book Examinations as per UGC.

UGC is also of opinion that final year students cant be granted degrees without exams being conducted as it is a severe violation of principals set by state. Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava who is speaking in favour of students took to Twitter and expressed his take on case.
