Alleging MCC violation, Sitaram Yechury critisises PM Modi's Kedarnath visit, says 'EC is sleeping'

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertakes a two-day visit to Uttarakhand on May 18 to pay obeisance at the Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath, a day after campaigning for the last phase of the staggered Lok Sabha elections spread over more than a month, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has criticized the PM saying that he has violated the Model Code of Conduct.

Taking to Twitter, Sitaram Yechury said religion is a matter of personal faith alleging that Modi violated the MCC brazenly with footage of his Kedarnath religious activity over TV channels'. He went on to allege that the Election Commission is not taking action against the BJP because it's 'sleeping'.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi shared a glimpse of his journey to the Himalayan shrines. Prime Minister also consulted and reviewed the redevelopment projects of the Kedar valley after 2013 floods.

Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal led AAP's Sanjay Singh mocked Prime Minister's visit calling him 'an Irani emperor' and said:

"Country has seen his meditation in 2002, in name of cow, as Anti-Romeo squad. Demonetisation was also a meditation. Even God knows his mediatiion, people will give an answer to his meditation on May 23."

Earlier, during the poll campaign, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury attacked the BJP for fragmenting the society for votes through its divisive policies, branding religious epics Ramayana and Mahabharata as specimens of Hindu violence. 

"Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur said that Hindus don't believe in violence. Many kings and principalities have fought battles in the country. Even the Ramayana and Mahabharata are also filled with instances of violence. Being a pracharak, you narrate the epics but still claim Hindus can't be violent? What is the logic behind saying there is a religion which engages in violence & we Hindus don't," he said.
