With voting in Rajasthan and Telangana coming to a close on Friday, a critical bout of assembly elections in five states has come to an end. All eyes now, are on the election results, which will be out on December 11, giving the people of India the clearest indication yet of what the mood of the nation is in the lead up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Ahead of this, Republic TV, with CVoter and Jan Ki Baat, will be announcing exit polls for all five states, updates for which will appear above.

While three of the states where elections have been held are currently under the Chief Ministership of BJP leaders – Rajasthan under Vasundhara Raje, Madhya Pradesh under Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Chhattisgarh under Raman Singh, Mizoram is one of the few states in which the Congress still rules under Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, while Telangana is a battleground for some very important regional powers, including Chief Minister KCR.

In 2014 assembly elections, out of the 119 seats in the then newly-created state of Telangana, TRS won 63 seats. Congress managed to hold second position with 21 seats, while AIMIM won seven seats. BJP, in alliance with the TDP, won 15, while the five remaining seats went to Others.

In the bipolar fight between BJP and Congress in Rajasthan, BJP's Vasundhara Raje, being the state's incumbent Chief Minister, is facing an aggressive Congress party. In the last assembly elections, BJP won a massive majority with 163 seats out of 200, while Congress secured just 21 seats.

In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan of the BJP has been in power for four consecutive terms since 2003. In the 2018 assembly elections, Congress is attempting to capitalise on any anti-incumbency, with senior leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kamal Nath in the fray. In the 2013 assembly elections, BJP won 165 seats out of 230 while Congress secured 58 seats at the second position.

In Chhattisgarh, the state will witness a battle between the BJP, the BSP (which has joined hands with Ajit Jogi's Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC), and the Congress for 90 seats in its assembly.

With the assembly elections, the final countdown to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections has begun. The results of the assembly polls in all five states, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Mizoram and Chhattisgarh will profoundly determine the national mood for the BJP and Congress party in the country while there is a lot at stake for both the parties.
