A sizzling contest awaits the Karakat Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar, with Samajwadi party announcing that its national spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari will contest from the seat. Alongside the Sharad Yadav-Pappu Yadav showdown in Madhepura, the Giriraj Singh-Kanhaiya Kumar contest in Begusarai and the Patna Sahib battle between Shatrughan Sinha and Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Karakat constituency will be an interesting contest to keep an eye on as RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha and JD(U) candidate Mahabali Singh are in the poll fray along with the SP's known face.

Once an advisor to the JD(U) in Bihar, Ghanshyam Tiwari, had in 2017 joined the SP as its national spokesperson. An MBA degree holder from Kellog’s Institute of Management and Masters in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School in the US, Tiwari had been a JD(U) advisor from 2010 to 2015. He had also been the communication advisor to the CM and a party spokesperson till 2016.

Karakat in Bihar’s Rohtas district is held by Upendra Kushwaha of the RLSP. Upendra Kushwaha won the general seat after defeating the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD’s) Kanti Singh. Mahabali Singh of the Janata Dal (United) won from the seat in 2009, a year after it was formed as a part of the implementation of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.
