Speculations of Sunny Deol joining the political party started when BJP chief Amit Shah met the actor in Pune on Friday, April 20. The 'Gadar' star has been spotted in Gurdaspur twice in the past week. The Gurdaspur seat was previously held by another former actor Vinod Khanna for four terms, till he passed away in 2017.

Prior to this, Sunny Deol's father, veteran actor Dharmendra had a brief stint in politics about ten years ago, when he contested the 2004 national election from Rajasthan's Bikaner on a BJP ticket and won. Last week, Dharmendra campaigned for his wife, actor and BJP lawmaker Hema Malini, in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura from where she is contesting the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased national election.
