"If Godse is a patriot, was Mahatma Gandhi anti-national?" asks Omar Abdullah slamming Sadhvi Pragya's controversial Godse remark

Hitting out at BJP's Bhopal candidate Pragya Thakur for calling Mahatma Gandhi's assailant Nathuram Godse a 'Deshbhakt', former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Thursday, has tweeted that if the 'killer of the father of the nation is a patriot does that make Mahatma Gandhi anti-national?'

Earlier in the day, Thakur had stirred a controversy when she responded to a reporter's question on MNM chief Kamal Haasan's 'free India's first terrorist was a Hindu' remark in reference to Nathuram Godse by saying that Gode will always remain a "Deshbhakt" (Patriot). She went onto add that those who have termed Godse as a terrorist will get a reply from the people in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 

"Nathuram Godse was, is and will remain a 'Deshbhakt'. People calling him a terrorist should instead look within, such people will be given a befitting reply in these elections," said Thakur.

Following her comments, her Congress rival for the Bhopal constituency, Digvijaya Singh lashed out at PM Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and the saffron party for "glorifying" Godse as a patriot. Condemning the remarks made by the BJP candidate, Digvijaya Singh demanded an apology from the BJP over the remarks against the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

"Narendra Modiji, Amit Shahji, and all the BJP leaders must give a statement on this and apologize to the country. I condemn the remarks made against the Father of the Nation. Nathuram Godse was a killer, and glorifying him is not nationalism, this is anti-nationalism," said Digvijaya Singh speaking to the reporters.

Thakur's own party too distanced itself with BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao clarifying that the party disagree with her statement and asked her to tender an apology.

"We are seeing in the media channels a statement made by Bhopal candidate Sadhvi Pragya Thakur about the Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi Ji. We completely disagree with the statement she has made with regard to Mahatma Gandhi and we strongly condemn this particular statement. The party, the BJP will ask as to why she made such a statement to seek or tender a public apology for her, this objectionable statement," he said.

On May 13, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan was addressing a rally wherein he said that free India's first terrorist was a Hindu, in reference to Mahatma Gandhi's assailant Nathuram Godse.

"I am not saying this because this is a Muslim-dominated area," Haasan prefaced his remarks, adding, "but I am saying this before a statue of Gandhi. Free India's first terrorist was a Hindu, his name is Nathuram Godse. There it began."
