Congress Working Committee met following party's drubbing in Lok Sabha elections as it won 52 seats, winning just eight more seats since 2014 polls. Congress president Rahul Gandhi's resignation was not accepted in meeting, despite party's poll debacle, as  'party needed him'.

party under Gandhi's leership not only lost  elections but failed to become a strong opposition to BJP owing to it winning just 52 seats.  voters did not seem to take well to Rahul Gandhi's digs at Prime Minister, constant mention of Rafale deal and allegations of corruption, sloganeering of 'Chowkidar Chor Hai'. party's manifesto promises, be it NYAY or proposal to dilute AFSPA and action against sedition law, and zero concrete measures against corruption did not go down well with Indian electorate.

party's plan to give Tumkur seat, where it h a sitting MP, to JD(S) supremo HD Devegowda backfired as he lost seat to a BJP candidate. Muddahanumegowda SP  h rebelled against party decision of giving seat to Devegowda and h even filed his nomination only to be pressurised to take it back.
