Delhi University polls held peacefully, 39.90% voter turnout
The voter turnout in Delhi University Students' Union polls on Thursday was recorded at 39.90 per cent, over four notches down, results to be declared on Friday

Last year, election saw a 44.46 per cent voter turut. polling for four positions of (DUSU) ended amid allegations of EVM malfunctioning. Sixteen candidates, including 4 women, were in fray and 52 polling centres were set up.

Over 1.3 lakh students were eligible to cast ir vote. As many as 144 EVMs were used for students' union polls and 137 were used for college union polls. Polling began in morning colleges at 9.30 am and ended at 1 pm, while in evening colleges it commenced at 3 pm and ended at 7.30 pm. voter turut recorded across 43 morning colleges was 39.69 per cent, almost four tches down from last year's figure of 43.8 per cent. In 2017, overall voting percent was 42.5 per cent while it was 36.9 per cent in 2016.Last year, ABVP h won three posts while NSUI won one post.

Hot and humid wear, holidays in colleges and disenchantment of students with politics were cited as reasons for lower turut. Thursday was a declared holiday for students on account of it being election day, so students did t turn up to cast ir votes, said some student leers. re were long queues to cast votes as Law Faculty, Miranda House and Ramjas College. In rth Campus, almost 400 police personnel were deployed to prevent any untoward incident, police said.

RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parish (ABVP) said its members won college union polls in 35 colleges and Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) said it won in 22 colleges. Sidharth Yav, State Secretary, ABVP, Delhi, said, "ABVP has won by a landslide in many college internal elections. se are very encouraging signs as far as impending outcome of DUSU poll is concerned." He ded "Despite low turut, it is a good sign that outfit has achieved a record mandate in college student union. We have received a good mandate in girls' colleges, which is a positive sign," said Akshay Laura, Delhi president of NSUI.

Former office bearers patrol
Senior Congress leer JP Aggarwal also visited rth Campus around 11.30 am to canvass for candidates of student wing of party and interacted with young voters. Outside colleges and booths, party workers were making last-minute efforts to woo voters and some were also engaging in verbal duel with opposition candidates.
Former DUSU office-bearers from ABVP and NSUI were seen walking through rth campus to gauge mood of voters. NSUI claimed its joint secretary candidate Abhishek Chaprana was refused entry to polling booths in Dyal Singh College in South Delhi. student outfit also claimed that Chaprana was "illegally detained". police said Chaprana was canvassing for votes outside college which was t allowed. When he was asked t to do it, he "misbehaved" with policemen and h to be detained, y said. outfit also alleged that an EVM malfunctioned at Aryabhatt college.

Ruchi Gupta, NSUI national in-charge tweeted, "Again, in Aryabhatt college, EVM is malfunctioning as usual against NSUI. When a ballot is pressed for NSUI candidate, EVM does t light up to indicate registration of vote. Our rep is getting more details." However, an election committee member said votes were being cast but re was some problem with light that glows. EVM was replaced, he said, ding 152 votes h been cast. NSUI's secretary candidate Ashish Lamba was t allowed to enter Ramjas College after ABVP alleged that he h brought some outsiders with him. police said that untoward incident was reported during polling which was peaceful.

At Kirori Mal College in Delhi University, three students, two men and a woman, tried to cast votes a second time by using IDs of ir friends, a college official said. disciplinary committee of college will take a decision on what action to take against m next week, he said. Kirori Mal College has also withheld results of central councillor posts. It was found candidates violated model code of conduct by putting up huge hoardings, defacing college property and using printed material for seeking votes.
"We received lots of complaints against candidates contesting for post of central Council posts. complaints are of gross violation of code of conduct which includes defacing of college property, distribution of published material and or goods, displaying of big hoardings etc. college is very serious on se complaints. committee will decide fate of se candidates, " said Dr. Rasal Singh, Proctor, KMC.
