Exit Poll methodology

The Exit Poll survey was conducted in all districts across all the states of India. The methodology is random stratified sampling using predominantly three techniques Field surveys, CATI, and IDIs with key people in districts and Lok Sabha Constituencies. We then use a probabilistic model to determine the number of seats a party is going to win from the estimated vote share.

The survey results have been adjusted in proportion to reflect the state and district population across age - groups, religion, gender and caste.

The questions in the survey were designed to reflect the current scenario electorally and politically and to gauge the critical factors that might play a role in the voting preference of a voter. There is error margin of 3%.

How are exit polls calculated?

Exit polls are calculated using a combination of sampling methods and statistical analysis by various agencies. The process involves several key steps:

Sampling: Pollsters select a diverse group of voters from different regions to represent the entire population, ensuring they include individuals across various demographics.

Questioning: The chosen voters are asked about their vote and other basic information, such as age and residence.

Data Collection: The responses are gathered and recorded systematically.

Weighting: The collected data is adjusted to ensure it accurately reflects the population. For instance, if there is an underrepresentation of young voters, their responses might be given more weight to balance the sample.

Analysis: Experts analyze the data to make predictions about the election outcomes based on the voters' responses.

Margin of Error: The exit polls also calculate the margin of error to indicate the level of certainty or uncertainty in their predictions.

These predictions are then shared with the public.
