New Delhi: Samajwi Party leer Shivpal Yav is likely to replace Akhilesh Yav as Leer of Opposition in Uttar Presh Assembly after latter resigns as MLA from state legislative assembly, said sources.

Akhilesh Yav, who was elected as legislator from Karhal assembly constituency in UP’s Mainpuri district in 2022 assembly elections, will have to resign from post before assuming his new role as MP from Kannauj.

Comeback of Samajwi Party in UP

In recently held Lok Sabha elections, Samajwi Party, which won 37 seats, emerged as powerful force that led to surge of INDI bloc in politically crucial state. 

Akhilesh Yav-led party sprung up as third largest party in 543-member Lok Sabha. A day after his party’s impressive show in Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh Yav on Wednesday said aim of ‘Samajwis’ was to stop BJP in Uttar Presh and y “succeeded” in it.

Samajwi Party (SP) chief h on Wednesday said, "I thank people of Kannauj, who supported positive politics and gave samajwis anor chance." “ aim of samajwis was to stop BJP and y succeeded in this fight,” he ded. SP, which les INDI bloc in UP, alone secured 37 seats this time, becoming single largest party. In a setback, BJP managed to win only 33 seats out of 80.  

SP supremo claimed victory in this seat by a margin of 1.7 lakh votes by defeating his nearest rival and BJP's Subrata Pathak. Yav received 6,42,292 votes while Pathak polled 4,71,370 votes. BSP's Imran Bin Zafar secured third spot with 81,639 votes.

Kannauj parliamentary constituency, a Samajwi Party stronghold since 1998, was breached by BJP in 2019, when Subrata Pathak won by a margin of about 12,000 votes, defeating Dimple Yav, wife of Akhilesh Yav.
