Maharashtra Election 2024 LIVE: Maharashtra Polls Percentage Till 5 PM

An estimated 65 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the Maharashtra assembly elections on Wednesday, where the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is making a determined bid to retain power and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition is hoping to continue its good showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The figures are provisional, election officials said, adding that 61.74 per cent of polling was recorded in the 2019 assembly elections in the state.

The Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district recorded a turnout of 69.63 per cent on Wednesday, while Mumbai, the financial capital, saw an estimated 54 per cent turnout. In the 2019 polls, Mumbai’s polling figure stood at 50.67 per cent.

Officials noted that poll percentage figures are provisional and may undergo minor revisions once all data is verified. The final voter turnout percentage is expected to be officially announced on Thursday.

Notably, an encouraging trend has been observed in urban constituencies, traditionally known for lower voter participation.

Mumbai's Colaba constituency, which recorded just 40 per cent turnout in 2019, showed an improved figure of 44.49 per cent this year, as per the figures shared by the state Chief Electoral Officer's office.

In rural areas, where voter engagement tends to be higher, several constituencies reported exceptional turnout rates.

Karvir constituency in Kolhapur district recorded 84.79 per cent turnout, which is expected to be the highest in the state. Similarly, other constituencies in Gadchiroli district also registered high participation.

Several Bollywood celebrities, including actors Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ranbir Kapoor, cast their votes adding a touch of glamour to the festival of democracy.

The voting for the 288 assembly seats began at 7 am and people sealed the fate of over 4,100 contesting candidates across 1,00,186 booths, an increase from 96,654 in the 2019 elections.

In the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP contested 149 seats, Shiv Sena 81 seats, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP fielded candidates in 59 constituencies.

In the opposition's MVA combine, the Congress fielded 101 candidates, Shiv Sena (UBT) 95, and NCP (SP) put up 86 candidates.

Parties like Bahujan Samaj Party and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), also contested, with BSP fielding 237 candidates and AIMIM putting up 17 candidates.

The MVA combine had performed well in this year’s Lok Sabha polls by securing 30 out of 48 seats in the state.

An analysis of the Lok Sabha results at the assembly segment level indicates that the MVA coalition would have narrowly surpassed the crucial 145-seat majority threshold, as it led in 153 assembly segments. The Mahayuti coalition led in 125 assembly segments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media, urging voters to partake in the elections with zeal, emphasising the importance of enhancing the "festival of democracy." He particularly appealed to women and young voters to make their voices heard.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday evening visited RSS headquarters in Nagpur after voting for the state assembly polls concluded.

According to sources, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and former general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi were present in the Sangh headquarters situated in Mahal area.

Fadnavis was present in the Sangh headquarters for around 15 to 20 minutes, sources added.

Earlier in the day, Fadnavis along with his family members cast his vote in western Nagpur.

The results of the assembly elections will be declared on November 23.

Fadnavis is seeking another term from the Nagpur South West assembly segment.

Sangh, the ideological mentor of the BJP, had launched an extensive outreach programme to shape public opinion in favour of the BJP-led alliance in the state, sources had said ahead of the assembly elections.

The most prominent leader in Maharashtra, Fadnavis is doing the heavy lifting to ensure that the tide turns in favour of the BJP in the assembly polls reversing its dismal performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP is a key constituent of the ruling Mahayuti, comprising Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena and NCP headed by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. 

An average voter turnout of 60.63 per cent was recorded till 5 pm on Wednesday in all eight districts of Marathwada region in the Maharashtra assembly elections.

At 70.46 per cent, Sillod constituency in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM, as per official data.

Voting for all 288 constituencies in Maharashtra was held from 7 AM to 6 PM.

Marathwada region accounts for 46 assembly segments spread across eight districts under the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar administrative division.

Jalna district came on top with the highest 64.17 per cent voting till 5 PM in the region.

The lowest voting percentage was recorded in Nanded where 55.88 per cent of voters cast their votes, as per the figures available till 5 PM.

Maharashtra recorded a voter turnout of 58.22 per cent till 5 pm on Wednesday in the elections to the 288-member state legislative assembly, with Gadchiroli district logging more than 69 per cent voting, poll officials said.

In the bypoll to the Nanded Lok Sabha constituency held simultaneously, the voter turnout till 5 pm was 53.78 per cent, they said.

Polling began at 7 am in the state, where the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is vying to retain power and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) combine is hoping for a strong comeback, and continued till 6 pm.

A total of 1,00,186 polling booths were set up across the state this time, compared to 96,654 booths in the 2019 assembly elections, the officials said.

Gadchiroli topped the list of districts with 69.63 per cent turnout till 5 pm. Aheri assembly seat in the district saw 68.43 per cent voting, Gadchiroli constituency 69.22 per cent and Armori 71.26 per cent, they said.

Mumbai city district and Mumbai suburban district recorded 49.07 per cent and 51.76 per cent voting respectively.

The Colaba assembly segment in south Mumbai registered 41.64 per cent polling, Mahim 55.23 per cent, Worli 47.50 per cent, Shivadi 51.70 percent and Malabar Hill 50.08 per cent.

In Mumbai suburban, Bhandup recorded 60.18 per cent voting, Dahisar 50.98 percent and Bandra East 49.51 per cent.

In Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency in Thane, where he is pitted against Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Kedar Dighe, the voter turnout was 55.77 per cent. The overall percentage of Thane district was 49.76 per cent, the officials said.

The Nagpur South-West constituency, from where Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is in the fray, the voter turnout was 51.54 per cent till 5 pm. The polling figure in Nagpur district was 56.06 per cent.

The Baramati seat in Pune district, from where Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar is fighting against his nephew Yugendra Pawar, recorded 62.31 per cent voter turnout, they added. This figure for Pune district was 54.09 per cent, they said.

Nashik district recorded 60.11 per cent turnout till 5 pm.

Altogether 53.78 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll till 5 pm on Wednesday, election officials said.

There is a direct fight between Ravindra Chavan of Congress and BJP’s Santukrao Hambarde.

The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of sitting Congress MP Vasant Chavan on August 26. Ravindra Chavan is his son.

Pratap Patil Chikhalikar, who won the 2019 Lok Sabha poll for Nanded seat as a BJP candidate, had defeated Ashok Chavan who was then with the Congress. Chikhalikar lost the 2024 Lok Sabha poll from Nanded to Vasant Chavan by a margin of over 59,000 votes.

Maharashtra polls recorded at 58.22 percentage till 5 PM.

A 113-year-old woman and a 103-year-old wheelchair-bound freedom fighter voted in the Maharashtra assembly elections in Mumbai on Wednesday, showcasing their commitment to the democratic process in the metropolis ill-famous for voter apathy.

Several octogenarians exercised their franchise in various assembly segments in Mumbai since 7 AM, thanks to facilities such as wheelchairs, wheelchair-friendly vans, Divyang-friendly buses, stair-climbing wheelchairs etc being made available at polling booths by the Election Commission.

Kanchanben Nandkishor Badshah, a 113-year-old resident of Nepean Sea Road, went to a polling station at Malabar Hill to exercise her franchise with the help of her relatives, a civic official said.

Though the Election Commission of India has provided a home voting facility for senior citizens above 85 years, 103-year-old wheelchair-bound GG Parikh preferred to cast his vote by visiting the polling station at Girton High School in Grant Road in the morning hours, a civic official said.

A neighbour and his housekeeper helped Parikh enter the polling booth in his wheelchair. The centenarian freedom fighter has been voting since India's first general elections in 1951-52, his aides said.

Many elderly voters cast their votes at various polling booths in Mumbai since morning, reflecting enthusiasm.

 The Thane city police on Wednesday registered a case against Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate from Kopri-Pachpakhadi Kedar Dighe, who is contesting against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, for alleged possession of liquor and cash, an official said.

Kedar Dighe is the nephew of Shinde’s mentor the late Anand Dighe, who wielded immense influence in the Thane region as a Shiv Sena leader.

As per the FIR registered at the Kopri police station, Dighe and a few others were apprehended with cash in envelopes and liquor at Ashtavinayak Chowk around 2 am. It has been alleged that they were planning to distribute the money and alcohol to voters.

Polling in all 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra is underway.

Dighe has been booked under Section 174 (undue influence or personation at an election) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.

Three unidentified persons allegedly opened fire at Shiv Sena candidate Bhausaheb Kamble's car in Maharashtra's Shrirampur in the early hours of Wednesday.

The three persons riding two motorcycles targeted Kamble's car near Ashok Sugar Mills on the day of polling. The bullets, however, didn't hit the car and Kamble, a police official said.

Shrirampur Police in Ahilyanagar district registered an FIR against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) on a complaint lodged by Kamble, the official said.

Nobody has been arrested so far and the investigation is underway, he added.

Kamble is in the poll arena against Congress' Hemant Bhujangrao Ogale.

Maharashtra recorded a voter turnout of 45.53 per cent till 3 pm on Wednesday in the elections to the 288-member state legislative assembly.

There are a total of 1,00,186 polling booths in Maharashtra this time, compared to 96,654 booths in the 2019 assembly elections, the officials said.

Gadchiroli tops the list of districts with 62.99 per cent turnout. Aheri assembly seat in the district saw 66.27per cent voting, while Gadchiroli constituency recorded 62.43 per cent voting. Armori saw 60.50 per cent polling.

Mumbai city district and Mumbai suburban district recorded 40.89 per cent and 39.34 per cent voting respectively.

The Colaba assembly segment in the megapolis registered 33.44 per cent polling, Mahim 45.56 per cent and Worli 39.11 per cent. Shivadi recorded 41.76 percent and Malabar Hill 42.55 per cent.

In Mumbai suburban, Bhandup polled 48.82 per cent votes, Dahisar 41.91 percent and Bandra East 39.49 per cent, they said.

In Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency in Thane, the voter turnout was 44.60 per cent, while the overall percentage of Thane district was 38.94 per cent.

The Nagpur South-West constituency, from where Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is in the fray, the voter turnout was 41.76 per cent till 3 pm, the officials said. Nagpur district recorded 44.45 per cent turnout.

In Baramati constituency in Pune district, from where Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar is fighting against his nephew Yugendra Pawar, the poll percentage was 43.57 per cent, they officials said, adding that Pune district recorded 41.70 per cent voter turnout.

Nashik district recorded 46.18 per cent turnout till 3 pm.

BJP candidate from Chinchwad Assembly constituency, Shankar Jagtap says, "I appeal to all the voters to exercise their right to vote. Everyone should come forward to vote for the progressive Mahrashtra and Viksit Bharat. The people are enthusiastic as work of the Mahayuti government has benefitted the people..."

According to officials, 45.53 per cent voter turnout till 3 pm in Maharashtra assembly elections.

Person wanted by ED in Maharashtra's 'cash for vote' case apprehended from Ahmedabad airport on Wednesday.

Nagani Akram Mohammad Shafi was intercepted by immigration authorities at the airport in neighbouring Gujarat on the basis of a lookout circular (LOC) issued by the ED. He was "trying to flee" to Dubai, they said.

The central agency conducted searches in poll-bound Maharashtra and Gujarat last week in the case registered against a Malegaon-based trader, Siraj Ahmed Harun Meman, who allegedly misused bank accounts of various people to carry out transactions worth more than Rs 100 crore.

Polling for the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly began at 7 am on Wednesday and will continue till 6 pm.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday (November 20) raided the premises of Gaurav Mehta in connection with the alleged Bitcoin Scam. Gaurav Mehta is an employee of an audit firm named Sarathi Associates. The searches were carried out in Raipur in Chhattisgarh.

The big pre-poll allegation dropped by former IPS officer Ravindra Patil that Supriya Sule and Congress' Nana Patole had used Bitcoin scam tainted cash to fund polls has blown out into an all-out political war on polling day. Supriya Sule on Wednesday refuted all allegation levelled against her saying all the allegations are completely false. Speaking to ANI, Sule said, "I have filed a defamation case and a criminal case. I am ready to answer his (Sudhanshu Trivedi) 5 questions wherever he wants. Time of his choice, place of his choice and platform of his choice. I am ready to answer him because all the allegations are completely false. All lies".  Earlier today, Pawar claimed that he could recognize the voice of his sister in the purported Audio clips that the former IPS officer Patil had alluded to as proof of Sule's involvement in the scam. The Deputy CM also promised an investigation into the scandal.

Actor Prem Chopra Cast His Vote in Mumbai

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday described Maharashtra as a beacon of progress and prosperity in the country and appealed to the people to come out in large numbers to vote in the assembly polls to strengthen the democratic system. Senior BJP leader Gadkari cast his vote at the Town Hall in Mahal area along with his family members and expressed confidence that the "double engine" government (led by his party at the Centre and in the state) will retain power in Maharashtra. Stressing the importance of voting, he called it a cornerstone of democracy. "Voting is our fundamental right in democracy. I appeal to the people to come out and vote. Increasing the voter turnout strengthens our democratic system," he said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday cast his vote in Mumbai, and urged people to exercise their franchise by coming out in large numbers in order to "protect the self respect of Maharashtra". Thackeray cast vote with his wife Rashmi and sons Aaditya and Tejas in Bandra East. "Vote in large numbers and protect the self-respect of Maharashtra," the former chief minister said. Thackeray's nephew Varun Sardesai is in the fray from the Bandra East assembly constituency.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday cast his vote for the Maharashtra elections and said that the state was a role model for the country considering the high foreign investments it received. Speaking to ANI, Gadkari said "Maharashtra is a progressive and prosperous state of the country. The state receives highest foreign investment and agricultural exports are also increasing here. It is a good role model state for the country. A good government and good leadership can change the future of Maharashtra. Further, he appealed to the people to vote in large numbers and strengthen the democracy.

Maharashtra recorded 18.14% voter turnout till 11 am.

Nashik City Police Commissioner, Sandeep Karnik said, "Polling is underway at 1,250 polling stations in Nashik. We have deployed a total of 3000 jawans from local police, home guards, central paramilitary forces, BDDS and others. We have identified 40 sensitive places in Nashik where paramilitary forces have been deployed. We will ensure that the orders of the District Collector and Election Officer are followed..."

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar voted for Maharashtra elections on Wednesday. 

Maharashtra Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, along with his family, cast vote in Chandrapur. 

After casting his vote in Baramati, NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar said, “People should vote and I am confident that people of Maharashtra will vote in large numbers in a peaceful manner. After 23 November, it will be clear who will be given the responsibility of forming the government in the state.” On allegations against Supriya Sule, he says, “...The person who made the allegations was in jail for several months and taking that person along and making false allegations, only BJP can do this.”

Maharashtra BJP President and party's candidate from Kamthi, Chandrashekhar Bawankule cast his vote and showed his inked finger at a polling station in Nagpur.

Maharashtra recorded 6.61 per cent voter turnout till 9 am on Wednesday as polling was underway in all 288 assembly constituencies of the state, as per election officials. Gadchiroli district witnessed 12.33 per cent turnout in the first two hours of polling. The Armori assembly segment in the district registered 13.53 per cent polling. In Mumbai suburban, 7.88 per cent turnout was recorded. Bhandup and Mulund suburbs saw 10.59 per cent and 10.71 per cent turnout. Mumbai city recorded 6.25 per cent polling. While Colaba saw 5.35 per cent turnout, Worli recorded 3.78 per cent polling, according to the election officials. 

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat were among the early voters to exercise their franchise as polling was underway on Wednesday for the state assembly elections. NCP leader Ajit Pawar and his wife Sunetra Pawar cast their vote at Katewadi in Baramati area of Pune district. The deputy CM is pitted against his nephew and NCP (SP) candidate Yugendra Pawar in the Baramati assembly seat. "I am confident that the people of Baramati will stand behind me and I will win the seat with a big lead," Ajit Pawar said. Yugendra Pawar also cast his vote along with his parents in Baramati.

The Indian stock, currency, and commodities markets will remain closed on Wednesday due to assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Actor Sonu Sood exercised his franchise at a polling booth in Mumbai. He said, "It is everybody's responsibility to go out and vote. It's very important for the country..."

After casting his vote, NCP leader and candidate from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, Nawab Malik said, "I exercised my franchise today. My family is also voting. I urge people to step out of their houses in large numbers and vote, and elect an MLA of their choice."

NCP candidate from Bandra East, Zeeshan Siddique cast his vote at a polling booth in Mumbai. Zeeshan Siddique said, "For the first time, I have come alone to vote. My father (Baba Siddiqui) is no more. This is different but this will have to be done. I know that my father is with me. I started my day by visiting the graveyard in the morning...I think everyone must vote..."

The high-stake elections in Maharashtra will witness a contest between two main alliances namely Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Mahayuti alliance, comprises the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), while the MVA consists of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP-SP. While the Mahayuti alliance is hoping to overcome anti-incumbency sentiments and retain power, the MVA is aiming to replace its previous success in the Lok Sabha elections by defeating the grand alliance.

NCP leader Supriya Sule has denied the Bitcoin allegations levelled against her and called them 'bogus'.  On Ajit Pawar's statement regarding allegations against her and Nana Patole, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule said, “He is Ajit Pawar, he can say anything. 'Ram Krishna Hari'...” She added, "I have filed a defamation case and a criminal case. I am ready to answer his (Sudhanshu Trivedi) 5 questions wherever he wants. Time of his choice, place of his choice and platform of his choice. I am ready to answer him because all the allegations are completely false."

NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Supriya Sule exercised her franchise for Maharashtra Elections on Wednesday.

Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Wednesday cast his vote at the polling booth in Raj Bhavan, under the Colaba Assembly constituency, as voting began for the state's Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters after voting, Governor Radhakrishnan urged citizens to participate actively. "Ours is the biggest democracy in the world. My appeal to all the youngsters, elders, and women is to come and vote. Whomever they want to vote for is their choice, but they should come out and vote. This is the basic duty of every citizen that whenever there is an election, we should go to the polling booth and vote," he said.

Maharashtra: Shiv Sena candidate from Mumba Devi seat, Shaina NC and her daughter Shanaya Munot showed their inked fingers after casting their votes for Maharashtra assembly elections. Shaina NC said "I want to appeal to my Mumbaikars to come out and cast their votes. You can raise if you cast your votes, you can criticise if you cast your votes. I have the blessings of Maa Mumba Devi. I hope people will give me a chance to work for the truth with full accountability and transparency..."

Bollywood Actor Akshay Kumar showed his inked finger after casting his vote in Mumbai for Maharashtra Elections. He said "The arrangements here are very good as I can see that arrangements for senior citizens are very good and cleanliness has been maintained. I want everyone to come out and cast their votes..."

BMC Commissioner and District Election Officer Bhushan Gagrani exercised his franchise in Mumbai for Maharashtra assembly elections.

Film director Kabir Khan cast his vote at a polling Booth in Mumbai. 

After casting his vote, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said, "The arrangements (at the polling station) were very good. I congratulate the Election Commission. The elections are being held in the middle of the week, so everyone is expecting a high voter turnout."

Maharashtra Deputy CM and NCP candidate from Baramati Assembly constituency, Ajit Pawar cast his vote for Maharashtra elections. He expressed hope that Mahayuti will form a govt in the state. “Mahayuti is going to form the government here...,” he said.

Actor Rajkummar Rao cast his vote at a polling Booth in Mumbai. He said, "It is very important (to vote). Everyone, please step out and vote. This is the voting day, it is very important."

NCP leader Ajit Pawar on Wednesday exercised his franchise in Maharashtra slections. While casting vote, he said, “I have full faith in the voters of Baramati. I can only speak for myself. I have faith in myself.” 

Home Minister Amit Shah urged the people of Maharastra to vote in large numbers today.

Polling began on Wednesday morning in the Maharashtra assembly elections, where the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is vying to retain power and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) combine is hoping for a strong comeback. Voting began in all the 288 assembly seats at 7 am and will end at 6 pm, an election official said. The votes will be counted on November 23. Over 9.7 crore voters will be choosing from among the 4,136 candidates in the fray, the official said. In the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP is contesting 149 seats, Shiv Sena is in the fray in 81 seats, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP has fielded candidates in 59 constituencies.

PM Modi on Wednesday urged the electorates in Maharashtra to vote in large numbers. Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Today, votes will be cast for all the seats of Maharashtra Assembly elections. I urge the voters of the state to be a part of it with full enthusiasm and add to the splendor of the festival of democracy. On this occasion, I appeal to all the youth and women voters to vote in large numbers.(sic).”

As many as 4,140 candidates are in the fray to secure a seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Maharashtra is all set for the assembly polls today as voting for all 288 seats of the Maharashtra legislative assembly will be held in a single phase.

 In a late evening press conference on the eve of Maharashtra polls, the BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed to expose Maha Vikas Aghadi ‘bit by bit’. During the press conference, the BJP presented an alleged ‘video and audio’ in which a female voice, allegedly of NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule, can be heard saying, "Need cash in exchange for bitcoins. You need not worry about any inquiry; we will handle it once we come to power." In the alleged video shared with media by the BJP, Sule is allegedly speaking to Gaurav Mehta, an employee of the audit firm Sarathi Association.  READ MORE

Mock polling is underway at a polling booth in Mahatma Society Club House of Pune. Polling on all 288 Assembly constituencies of the state will begin at 7 am on November 20.
