Maharashtra: Shiv Sena in a Fix Over Number of Seats for Election

Shive Sena party was expecting 144 seats for the Maharashtra assembly elections but is in a fix with BJP over accommodating smaller alliance parties.

Shiv Sena party agreed to contest elections with 135 seats of total 288 seats in alliance with BJP party for Maharashtra Assembly polls but wanted senior National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner to accommodate smaller allies in BJP's seat quota. Sena was reportedly amant on contesting 144 seats for Maharashtra polls and has demanded a revolving chief ministership in event of NDA returning to power once again. Though a formal seat-sharing deal between two saffron allies is yet to be finalised everyone is waiting for parties to seal deal.

" BJP and Sena may accept a formula to contest 135 seats each and leave 18 seats for smaller allies like RPI(A), Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and Shiv Sangram Party," a senior leer said on Tuesday. But Sena wanted BJP to allot 18 seats to smaller allies from its own quota of seats reasoning that y are partners of BJP. But to accommodate this demand BJP will end up with only 117 seats to contest polls.

Complicating matter, RPI(A) leer and Union Minister, Ramdas Athavale, RSP leer and state minister Mahev Jankar and Vinayak Mete of Shiv Sangram Party have refused to accept party's demand to contest assembly polls on BJP tickets. As per reports, poll manrs of BJP are demanding more than 135 seats to accommodate leers from Opposition parties and its 'growing political might'. In 2014 assembly elections, which both parties contested separately, BJP won 122 seats and Shiv Sena h 63. 2019 Maharashtra Assembly polls are slated to be held in October.

Uddhav Thackeray Anunced 'Inevitable Alliance'

Last Saturday, Sena president Uddhav Thackeray shared dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fnavis in Mumbai and anunced that saffron alliance for polls was 'inevitable'. seat-sharing formula of 135 seats each was first mooted by state BJP unit president, Chandrakant Patil a few months ago. However, Sena claims that BJP president Amit Shah and Fnavis h agreed to Sena's demand for 144 seats and CM post for a period of 2.5 years in five-year term of government.
