PM Narendra Modi changes his twitter name to 'Chowkidar Narendra Modi' after initiating #MainBhiChowkidar poll campaign

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' campaign for upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he has changed his Twitter name to 'Chowkidar Narendra Modi'.

Earlier on Saturday, the Modi-led BJP launched this campaign to counter the Congress's 'Chowkidar Chor Hai' jibe with the campaign '#MaiBhiChowkidar'. Congress President Rahul Gandhi has time and again hurled the 'Chowkidar Chor Hai' barb at PM Modi over Rafale fighter jet deal. 

The PM released a video with the same title on Twitter and said, "Your Chowkidar is standing firm and serving the nation". 

"But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar," PM Modi said in a tweet that also had the video attached.

The lyrics of the video touch upon many of the flagship schemes launched by the Modi government, including Mudra Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana and the Clean India initiative. The video ends with the appeal to people to join PM Modi's "Main Bhi Chowkidar" programme on March 31.

Within hours after initiating the campaign, BJP's #MainBhiChowkidar became the No.1 trend on the internet, taking the social media, especially Twitter by storm. The campaign was launched in the morning and by noon, it became the biggest talking point on the social media website.

Aimed at bringing people together and suggesting anyone who fights and stands up against the wrong is a 'chowkidar', the party is hoping to recreate the 'Chai pe charcha' campaign magic which began prior to 2014 polls following chaiwala jibe by Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on PM Modi.

The use of the word "chowkidar" dates back to the poll campaigning ahead of the 2014 general elections when Mr Modi had promised to work as a "chowkidar" to guard people's money and their trust once elected to the top office.
