Telangana Assembly election 2023: 'Congress used 'Deepfake' technology for campaigning', alleges BRS

The Congress party in the Telangana Elections campaign has been accused by BRS in a letter to the ECI of unlawfully using 'Deepfake' technology.

Telangana Assembly Election 2023 battle is getting intense with parties taking jibes at each or and making severe allegations to claim throne. In latest development, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) wrote a letter to Election Commission of India (ECI) against unlawful use of ‘Deepfake’ techlogy in Telangana Elections campaign by Congress party.

In a letter dressed to poll panel, grave concerns were raised by BRS regarding alleged misuse of ‘Deepfake’ techlogy and Artificial Intelligence in ongoing elections of Telangana State Legislative Assembly, 2023.

In a letter to ECI, BRS alleged, “According to sources, Telangana Presh Congress Committee (TPCC) is involved in creation and dissemination of fake audio and video content through use of ‘Deepfake’ techlogy and artificial intelligence. fabricated content reportedly targets prominent leers, including CM of Telangana K. Chandrashekar Rao, and IT Minister K.Τ. Rama Rao, Minister for Finance Harish Rao, Member of Legislative Council of Telangana Kavitha Kalvakuntla, and or contesting candidates of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party.”

BRS makes a scathing allegation against Telangana Congress

Deepfake techlogy, a of Artificial Intelligence, is capable of creating hyper-realistic videos or audio recordings of individuals saying or doing things y never actually said or did. This raises concerns about potential use of such techlogy to create convincing fake content that could misle and harm public, letter re.

letter emphasized gravity of using deepfake techlogy in an election campaign, deeming it unlawful, unacceptable, and criminal in nature. It pointed out that such deceptive practices have potential to unfairly influence outcome of an election, with legal distinction between ‘Deepfake’ content and or forms of fake content. All forms of fake content are considered equally unlawful and unacceptable in an election campaign, constituting corrupt practices.

Given illegal and dangerous nature of se activities, letter to ECI called for immediate intervention to prevent furr harm to fair conduct of election. 

Anticipating likely circulation of manipulated content across various social media platforms, letter earnestly requested a prompt and thorough investigation into matter. BRS, in its letter, urged authorities to take necessary actions to identify and restrain TPCC and its various legal, n-legal, and invisible handles from creating and disseminating misleing content in any media format, including but t limited to ims, videos, and memes.
