Actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan has been the Mr Perfectionist of Hindi cinema for more than thirty years but recently revealed that he almost walked away from it all to prioritise his family. He felt that his commitment to the industry had taken a personal toll. In a recent interview, Aamir and his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, discussed the challenging moments of balancing personal and professional life before starting Laal Singh Chaddha.
Aamir Khan shared that he once nearly quit Bollywood
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir Khan shared that few years back, he decided to quit Bollywood due to a personal life issue. He said, “I decided to quit before Laal Singh Chaddha,” revealing that he was undergoing a personal journey at the time.
He explained, “Towards the end of Covid, I suddenly realised that I had spent the majority of my adult life, from the age of 18 to now, dedicating all my bandwidth and focus to cinema and films.”
Aamir Khan admitted feeling guilty about not being present for the family
Aamir Khan confessed that he felt guilty about not being fully engaged in his relationships, admitting, “I haven’t been there enough for my relationships – my kids, siblings, and family. Whether it was Kiran or Reena, when I was married to them. I felt that I wasn’t there for these people enough." This realisation came during the filming of Laal Singh Chaddha, which resumed after the Covid break. “During the middle of Covid, I went through an emotional period where I realised that I had given my whole life to cinema and had not been there for my family. I felt a lot of guilt,” he shared.
He further explained that at one point he even sat down with his family to share his thoughts. “I told them that I wanted to quit films and spend more time with all of you. That was my response; it wasn’t because I was disappointed with cinema,” he said. Junaid and Ira persuaded him not to quit. Though his family understood his decision to step away, when the time came to discuss it with potential directors, his children urged him to reconsider. “Junaid said, ‘Why do you have to go from one extreme to the other? There is a space somewhere in the middle where you can be,’” Aamir explained. With their support, he reflected on the matter and viewed it as a “personal journey.”
