Anurag Singh’s directorial movie Kesari set the box office on fire by entering the ₹ 100 crore club in its opening weekend. Akshay Kumar portrayed Havildar Ishar Singh, who led the army of 21 Sikh soldiers against more than 10,000 Afghan invaders in the Battle of Saragarhi. The fable of these legendary army forms the narrative of this film.

In an interview with a leading daily, Akshay Kumar revealed that his character was not challenging because the director Anurag Singh was well prepared. The Tees Maar Khan actor said that the director worked on the story for one year. For Akshay, the only difficulty was wearing heavy turban. Furthermore, it took him about 35 to 40 minutes to tie it. Adding to it, he remarked that Kesari is quite different from all the Sikh films he had done so far.

In the interview, Akshay Kumar said that out of five biggest battles fought, the one represented in Kesari stands at number two. He also called his characters like a dream role as he portrays a brave man, who fights for his honour and country. moreover, he called it a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Kesari is based on the bravery and valour of soldiers in the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi. The Afghans strategically attacked Saragarhi by cutting off the communication between the two main forts and attacked in isolation. According to history, the war started at 9 am on September 12, 1897, and the 21 Sikh soldiers, fought for approximately six hours, leaving about 600 Afghans dead. The soldiers fought to hold on to their fort as long as they could and give time to reinforce to reach the other two forts.

Kesari released on the occasion of Holi on March 21, 2019. The movie garnered positive reviews from the critics and the audience. Produced under the banners of Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, Azure Entertainment and Zee Studios, Kesari went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
