The film has many meta-references
The comedy film has many meta-references in it, which give nod to the previous work of the lead actors. In the scene where Aamir's character is cutting the ribbon of a jail cell, Papa Kehte Hai Bada Naam Karega song plays in the background. This was a subtle yet funny reference to Aamir Khan's previous hit film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Similarly, in one part of the film, Salman Khan's character says that he has watched the film Sholay 10 times, to which Aamir's character replies "Iske baap ne toh likhi hai". Salman Khan's father had actually co-written Sholay along with Javed Akhtar.

Reportedly, both the male lead actors were in a creative argument of getting more screen time, before they settled on an equal length of screen time eventually.
