Many Bollywood directors and writers are also heavily influenced by the playwright and made some movies adapting stories from his plays.

Maqbool
The movie Maqbool was released in the year 2003. It was directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. The movie was the modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragic play Macbeth. The movie starred Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, and Om Puri.

Omkara
Omkara is an action drama-thriller from the year 2006. This movie was also directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. Actors Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Vivek Oberoi played pivotal roles in the movie. It was based on another Shakespearean tragedy Othello.

Vishal Bharadwaj continued with his Shakespearean adaptations with the movie Haider. It is based on the play Hamlet. The movie is set in Kashmir. The movie starred Tabu, Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, and Narendra Jha.

10 ml Love
The 2010 movie 10 ml Love was a Sharat Katariya directed romantic comedy. It was based on William Shakespeare’s comedy play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The movie starred Rajat Kapoor, Purab Kohli, Neil Bhoopalam and Tisca Chopra.

All Romeo and Juliet adaptations
Bollywood has adapted the romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet of William Shakespeare numerous times. Ishaqzaade, starring Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor, was a 2012 romantic thriller loosely based on Romeo and Juliet. The movie Issaq from 2013 was a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet starring Prateik Babbar and Amyra Dastur. In the same year, Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was released, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The movie starred Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
