Boman Irani joins '83', Ranveer Singh pens a heartwarming welcome note

Veteran Bollywood actor Boman Irani has joined the ensemble cast of upcoming sports drama '83', which features Ranveer Singh as Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev.

Veteran Bollywood actor Boman Irani has joined the ensemble cast of upcoming sports drama '83', which features Ranveer Singh as Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev. The film will chronicle India's historical first Cricket World Cup win against England at the Lord's stadium, under Kapil's captainship. The Men in Blue defeated West Indies in the final to clinch their first-ever World Cup trophy in 1983. In the Kabir Khan directorial, Boman Irani will be seen essaying the role of former opening batsman and wicket-keeper, Farokh Engineer, who was one of the commentators at the 1983 World Cup.

On Tuesday, Ranveer Singh took to social media and welcome Boman Irani to the squad with heartwarming social media posts. He shared a number of pictures with the actor and his director Kabir Khan where the three of them can be seen posing in the Lord’s Cricket Ground, London, which Ranveer described as 'Mecca of Cricket' in the post. Hailing Boman Irani as 'one of the finest actors', Ranveer Singh expressed his immense admiration for the veteran star.

"It's a great honor to play this legendary character": Boman Irani on playing Farokh Engineer

Boman Irani who will be essaying the role of cricketer Farokh Engineer in the upcoming venture said that he considers it to be a great opportunity in his part. Talking about Farokh Engineer, Boman Irani reportedly said, "He was the only Indian commentator during the 1983 World Cup. His story, along with co-commentator Brian Johnston's, runs parallel to the main narrative."

Boman Irani who joined the cast during shooting for the film in London said he will be joining the rest of the cast in Mumbai after a couple of days shoot in London.

"I will be shooting for a couple of days here, and then join the team in Mumbai. It's a great honor to play this legendary character," PTI quoted Boman Irani as saying.

"I went to Manchester during the World Cup this year and stayed with him for a few days. We even watched India versus Pakistan match together. It was so surreal; like meeting your boyhood hero. I stayed at his house and we had some good laughs while trying to understand the man for the role," he added.

'83' The film

Beside Ranveer Singh and Boman Irani, '83' also features Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Ammy Virk, Chirag Patil, Jiiva and Harrdy Sandhu in the lead. Ranveer's wife Deepika Padukone also joined the cast of the film and she will be essaying the role of Kapil's spouse Romi Dev. The film marks Deepika and Ranveer's first on-screen collaboration post their November 2018 wedding. '83'is being co-produced by Madhu Mantena, Sajid Nadiadwala and Reliance Entertainment. It is slated to hit the screens on April 10, 2020.
