Deepika Padukone came out and publicly talked about her mental illness in 2014. Since she came out about her experience with depression, she has become an ambassador to fight the taboo of mental illness in India. She founded a foundation known as The Live Love Laugh Foundation or TLLLF. Her foundation recently won an award for their work in spreading awareness and fighting the taboo against mental illness. The award won by the foundation was the Dr Guislain 'Breaking the Chains of Stigma' Award for 2019 in Ghent, Belgium. After this, Deepika came out and spoke more about what she had to go through when she was facing the illness. In an interview with an online portal, she opened up and spoke about how she has opened her black book.

Deepika Padukone expressed that she and her mother live in different cities but often meet each other. On one such instance, Deepika stated that she started crying while her mom was about to leave. It was very unusual for her mother to see her daughter cry. Deepika’s mother asked her why she was crying. Was it about her work? Was it about a relationship? Deepika answered that none of those things were bothering her. She revealed that she was feeling empty from the inside.

Listening to this, Deepika’s mom asked her to seek help. Without hesitation, Deepika was ready to do what her mother said. That is when Deepika reached out to an old family friend and therapist, Anna Chandy. Deepika was then diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety.

Deepika added that she was not aware of the illness and did not realize that mental health is very important. She also said that there are no visible symptoms for mental health problems, unlike fever, for instance. She also questioned that the public is not thought to recognize the symptoms of mental illness in the same way they learn about fever. Deepika also said only because her mother was aware of these things she was able to help her better than anyone else could have.
Deepika also said that fighting this was very tough, but the faster you know what want from your life the faster you will recover. She added that self-awareness is the reason why she was able to recover. She did a lot of things that she liked and started enjoying the small things that mattered to her. She also said that enjoyment used to always come with guilt, and now she has stopped doing so, which helped her grow.
