Gully Boy: Zoya Akhtar 'overwhelmed' as film nominated for Oscars

After enthralling audiences and critics alike and winning hearts at the box office, ‘Gully Boy’ has been announced as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards next year. The film, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt and directed by Zoya Akhtar, is the story of a youngster from Mumbai slums who attains popularity as a rapper.

Zoya reacts to the news:
Reacting to the news, ace-filmmaker 'Gully Boy' in an interview with a leading media publication stated that the whole thing has been a little 'crazy', but overall the year has been wonderful and that she is qyuite 'overwhelmed' with the response. I am thrilled and very grateful that Gully Boy has been picked as India’s official entry for the Oscars.", she added.

About 'Gully Boy'
Gully Boy’ had released on February 14, Valentine’s Day earlier this year and is based on the story of many real-life rappers like Divine and Naezy, who made it big after showcasing their rapping skills in the slums of Mumbai. The film was unanimously lauded by the critics and was accepted by the audiences as well. ‘Gully Boy’ even entered the Rs 100-crore club at the box office.

‘Gully Boy’ was produced by Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment. It was the second collaboration between Zoya Akhtar and Ranveer Singh after ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ also featuring Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and Shefali Shah.

The movie had particularly left the Bollywood stars awed. Karan Johar had written a length note for the film then, “When passion supersedes grass root realities...when dreams make you wake up to bigger dreams....when you wrap rap into a form of solid expression....when you tell a story that has all this and more....that’s when you have a film that you can assuredly call a MASTERPIECE of modern times!"
