veteran lyricist-screenwriter, who is kwn for being vocal on pressing issues, expressed apprehensions that those sentenced must t be let out a few years later despite committing such a 'heius crime'.
" I just saw verdict on television that culprits who were responsible for inhuman barbaric act have been awarded life imprisonment and I also heard that some people were disappointed by verdict because y believed that culprits deserve capital punishment," said Akhtar, who attended a book launch event in city.
"I must, in all honesty, accept that I do t have a clear cut idea about capital punishment, wher it is right or wrong. One thing I am sure about is that capital punishment is t a deterrent of crime because where y have banned capital punishment, crime hasn't increased, and where y have kept it, crime hasn't reduced. So, I have idea that wher y should have been given capital punishment or a life term is good eugh. I am t sure," he opined.

Akhtar went on to say that while verdict prounced may be satisfactory, accused must t be let off after a short while, as is case in many instances.

And n he or she lives happily ever after," said ted lyricist. "I hope life imprisonment is good eugh but it will t have se kinds of privileges that after two or three years same people will be walking out free."
