There used to be time in cinema, when movies would take a slow start at the box office, and it used to take a considerable number of days for the word-of-mouth to spread, before it went ‘housefull’ at the box office. One example of this was Sholay. That also helped makers to an extent when the negative word-of-mouth would take time before hampering a film that had already got people to the theatres. However, things aren’t the same anymore, mainly because of social media. Movies like Stree in 2018 or Uri: The Surgical Strike earlier this year showed a magical turnaround at the box office after an average start, as word-of-mouth spreads so fast courtesy social media nowadays. Not to forget, when the movie is not as per expectations or witnesses a mixed response, it doesn’t take a lot of time for it to be completely written off on social media. While Thugs of Hindostan experienced this last Diwali, it’s likely that Housefull 4 could follow suit, if the initial responses are concerned. While most critics panned the Akshay Kumar comedy, netizens also went creative with numerous memes after the viewers shared their reviews.
Netizens had a field day after Housefull 4 got poor reviews from most quarters. Many of them made memes galore, sharing how the viewers reacted to it. One of them shared a meme from Akshay’s own film Phir Hera Pheri asking to return their monies. There were many more in this category. They also made memes of audience venting their anger, or feeling sleepy or bored. Some of them also compared it to the unanimously panned Humshakals. Check out the memes here:
Reviews impacted collections?
Despite the poor reviews, Housefull 4 took a good start at the box office on opening day. It earned Rs 18.50 crore on opening day, as per trade reports. The collections turned out to the lowest for an Akshay Kumar film this year, since Kesari and Mission Mangal had done a lot better, earning Rs 20 crore and Rs 27 crore respectively. However, with a Sunday approaching and Diwali holidays going on currently, a big turnaround could be on the cards.
