How Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film school stint in Australia inspired him for Animal background score

The recently released Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has achieved great success at the box office. Besides its treatment and performances, the film has also earned great love for its soundtrack, including the fresh background score. During a recent media interaction, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga opened up on what could possibly have inspired him to develop a taste for disorienting, off-beat music while editing his movies.

I had one casette, and two albums for my daily car route: Vanga

Vanga was speaking to Galatta team when he recalled his film school stint in Australia. Vanga apparently landed in Australia in 1994 for his film school, and had bought a second hand car from a friend’s friend. That car had only one cassette, which had two Telugu film albums on it - Swathi Muthyam and Sagara Sangamam.

When Vanga heard Indian music on his daily commute in Australia

Vanga recalled, “I used to go via pitt street via roseberry to my film school. On my way, I would see these big, long buildings while the soundtrack played these gentle songs like Chinnari. This visual and this audio - and I used to enjoy my drive. The idea of hearing Indian roots’ music in a white country. There came a point when I would wait for school to finish so that I could enjoy this music and that visual. Maybe it started from there - using a different sound in a different emotion, and see how it works.”

While many noted composers came together to compile the soundtrack for Animal, the film's background score was composed by Harshwardhan Rameshwar. Animal, which released on December 1, also stars Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri and Bobby Deol in prominent roles.
