Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt in the leading role, has performed poorly at the box office despite its release on Dussehra. Amid controversies surrounding its casting and the allegations that the film is a "copy" of Divya Khosla Kumar's Savi, Jigra has tanked at the ticket windows with no signs of a comeback. The film saw a full-fledged release in Telugu states but has not even managed to cross the ₹25 lakh mark in the region. This disastrous verdict for the film may have far-reaching consequences.

Distributors back out from buying Bollywood films?

Reportedly, the failure of Jigra has resulted in distributors in the South showing no interest in acquiring female-led Bollywood movies. Because of this, Kangana Ranaut starrer Emergency, which has reportedly cleared CBFC formalities after undoing cuts suggested by the board, will suffer. According to a report in Great Andhra, Telugu distributors are shying away from securing rights of Emergency given that Jigra offered no returns to them. This is going to be a cause of worry for the makers who have recently cleared the censorship hurdle.

This also goes on to emphasise that the market for Hindi films down South is restricted to just big stars.

Alia's Jigra tanks at box office

Alia Bhatt led jailbreak drama Jigra became her worst opener in over a decade. The film has shown no signs of resurrection at the box office and has barely managed to cross the ₹25 crore mark in nine days in India. It might end up becoming the actress' lowest-grossing film to date. Highway (2014) is the lowest earner of Alia's career so far and stands at ₹28.34 crore. However, it was a critical success and catapulted the Raazi star into mainstream success.
