The movie has already been screened at various international film galas. It was also the opening film at the Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) and was honoured with the Best Indie Film award. It was released in India on September 14 along with 'Manmarziyaan' starring Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal. 'Manmarziyaan' is helmed by Anurag Kashyap. Both 'Manmarziyaan' and 'Love Sonia' have garner mixed responses from the audience at the box office.

From what one can make out, the film is based on the harrowing account of two sisters who are robbed of their innocence. While one is sold by her debt-ridden father, the other sets out on a journey with the hope to rescue the former but gets trapped too. Directed by Tabrez Noorani, the film has an ensemble cast comprising Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Rajkummar Rao, Sai Tamhankar, Adil Hussain, Demi Moore, Freida Pinto and newcomer Mrunal Thakur.
As 'Love Sonia' garnered mix reviews at the box office, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer 'Stree' crossed the Rs. 150 crore mark including the film's collections at the global box office. Seems like actor Rajkummar Rao was in a competition with himself with this one.
