Rani Mukherji is returning to the silver screen after five years with Mardaani 2. The film is a sequel to the 2014 film, Mardaani. Just like the previous film, Mardaani 2 will also focus on women empowerment, as evident from the film's teaser that was unveiled recently. Rani is well known for making women empowering films over the years and here are some of them.
Rani Mukherji's films on women empowerment
Baabul
Baabul is a 2006 release with Ravi Chopra as director and starring Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham and Salman Khan in a special appearance. Rani Mukherji plays the role of a widow while Amitabh plays her father-in-law, who fights resistance from family members as he wishes for his daughter-in-law to remarry. The film makes a strong case for widow re-marriage but it has proved to be a flop at the box-office.
No One Killed Jessica
This is a 2011 release which refers to the Jessica Lal murder case that had taken place in the year 1999. The film is a Rajkumar Gupta directorial and stars Vidya Balan as Jessica Lal's sister, Sabrina Lal as well as Rani Mukherji, who plays the news reporter following the murder case. No One Killed Jessica harps on the issue of women safety. It is a box-office success and Rani is a Filmfare Award winner for the Best Supporting Actress due to this film
Mardaani
Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, Mardaani is a 2014 release in which Rani plays Shivani Shivaji Rao, a tough police officer who deals with the kidnapping of a teenage girl which ultimately leads to her uncovering secrets of human trafficking of girls in India. The film has won critical acclaim for its story and performances and commercial success as well.
Mardaani 2 is Rani Mukherji's first film in five years. It will be directed by Gopi Puthran and produced by Rani's husband, Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films. Filming began on March 2019 and the teaser was attached with the release of the latest Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff starrer, War.
