Mukesh Khanna Says He Became A 'Big Joke' After Playing Dad To Feroz Khan In Yalgaar
Mukesh Khanna opens up about playing Feroz Khan's father in Yalgaar and how this role impacted his relationship with the actor-director.
Actor Mukesh Khanna has been a part of the 90s generation television-watching experience because of his show Shaktimaan. He played the role of the superhero of the same name in this serial whilst serving as the producer of the show as well. In a recent interview, Mukesh Khanna opened up about playing Feroz Khan’s father in Yalgaar.
Mukesh Khanna: I became a joke in industry
In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Mukesh Khanna shared about his role in the 1992 film Yalgaar. He said, “I became a joke in the industry.” He further explained, “There was a scene between Feroz and me on the breakfast table, where he called me dad in between the conversation. Industry people had made it a laughing point.”
Khanna recalled, “After that incident, I was avoiding him throughout. But, we happened to meet at Sanjay Khan’s daughter’s wedding. At the wedding, I think he noticed that I was ignoring him, so he came to me and greeted me. At that point, I revealed to him that I was upset with him after what he did at Yalgaar’s premiere. He told me, ‘Mukesh, I was tensed about something and it skipped my mind.”
He further revealed, “An assistant came at my house near Marine Drive and claimed, ‘I have come from Feroz Khan’s team’. I greeted him, we had a conversation over chai. He narrated me the story and said, ‘You will be the commissioner, you are dealing with a don played by Kabir Bedi and Feroz Khan will play an inspector, who is also your son.’ This whole time, I didn’t have objection that how can I play father to Feroz Khan. I just had in mind, I don’t want to do this film.”
Directed by Feroz Khan, 1992 film Yalgaar tells the story of two childhood friends Mahendra Ashwini Kumar and Raj Pratap Singhal, turn foes when one of them becomes a policeman while the other gets involved in criminal activities. The film featured Manisha Koirala, Sanjay Dutt, Vicky Arora, Nagma, Kabir Bedi and Deepti Naval among others.

Mukesh Khanna rose to prominence with his portrayal of Bhishma in the mythological epic Mahabharata. Some of his other popular movies and shows are Chandrakanta, Aryamaan – Brahmaand Ka Yodha, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, International Khiladi and Krishna Aur Kans. He was last seen in Telugu film Purushothamudu, which released in 2024.
