OMG 2 vs Gadar 2 Advance Booking: Will Akshay Kumar film take lead after trailer release?

The domestic box office is set to witness a huge clash on the Independence Day weekend. OMG 2 and Gadar 2 will both release on August 11. The advance bookings have opened for both films and the staggering numbers stand testament to the audience's excitement for the movies.

• Gadar 2 is a sequel to the 2001 film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Lead actors Sunny Deol and Ameesah Patel will reprise their roles. 
• OMG 2 is a spiritual sequel to the 2012 film Oh! My God starring Akshay Kumar. 
• Advance bookings have shown that Gadar 2 has the early lead.

Gadar 2 vs OMG 2: Sunny Deol's film gets a good start 

The advance booking figures for both films show an increased interest in the Sunny Deol starrer. As per Sacnilk, Gadar 2 has already sold 62,505 tickets for day 1. Just through advance booking, the film has already collected Rs 1.68 crore.

While OMG 2 advance bookings started slow, the ticket sales of the Akshay Kumar film are picking pace. The film has sold 8310 tickets in advance bookings, amounting to Rs 28.1 lakh. The film started selling tickets in advance even before the trailer was released. The latest figures have shown a positive interest in the film. 

What will pull the audience to cinema halls?

With both movies releasing on the same day, cine-goers will be spoilt with choices. The clash will also impact the business of both films. Talking about which film is likely to perform better, trade analyst Ramesh Bala told Republic Digital, “I am expecting Gadar 2 to do better because Gadar was a very huge blockbuster along with Lagaan.”

He also asserted that the subject of the Sunny Deol starrer will help in drawing the audience. He said, “The subject is also more appealing, given the India- Pakistan narrative. It has got a better chance to do well at the box office than Oh My God 2.”

However, trade analyst Akshaye Rathi maintained that both movies have their strengths and merits to get a big opening. He opined that while Gadar 2 is an “iconic mass entertainer”, OMG 2 is also a “popular film” and Akshay Kumar’s stardom will aid the film’s business.

Sumit Kadel said Gadar 2 will find a bigger audience as it “caters to the mass audience and to single screen audience”. He also assured that OMG 2’s success will rely on good word of mouth.
