Roam Rome Mein about men coming face-to-face with patriarchy

Roam Rome Mein is the upcoming Indian psychological drama film starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role. The film is directed by acclaimed actor Tannishtha Chatterjee whose credits include Brick Lane (2007), Anna Karenina (2012), Lion (2016), and Parched (2015). It is said that Roam Rome Mein is her directorial debut film. It is said that in most cases, debut films get pushed around for a release date. But Tannishtha Chatterjee’s Roam Rome Mein was brought forward by a month and a half. However, recently opening up about the film, Chatterjee said that she did not want Roam Rome Mein to be an obvious film about a brother searching for his missing sister. Therefore, she decided to add a touch of surrealism to the story.

Tannishtha Chatterjee on Roam Rome Mein

Roam Rome Mein revolves around Reena, played by Tannishtha, who goes to Rome to find freedom from a strict patriarchial father. When she goes missing, her brother, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, undertakes a journey to find his missing sister. On his journey, he meets some magical characters who take him through his own journey of self-realisation and he learns about Reena’s life as well.

Tannishtha said that the idea came from her own experience when she was in Rome. “I went to a money exchange place and there was an old man who invited me home. It was a very weird dinner and at 9.30 pm, he looked at me and said 'it's time for you to leave!' He gave me a total lowdown on the history of feminism, Renaissance, Italy, Venice. Ten days later, when I went back to the place, I couldn't find it. The shopkeeper next to it told me that for hundreds of years there was nothing but a wall!” she said. "Till date, I don't know what that was. My father says I was hallucinating; I might've made a mistake. But I am sure I went back there and I couldn't find it, I just saw a wall," she added.

According to reports, the director narrated the story to Nawazuddin Siddiqui when they were working on Lion (2016). Nawazuddin encouraged her to build up the premise. Tannishtha said she eventually found the essence of the story of a girl rebelling and men coming face-to-face with patriarchy. Thus, she says that she decided to add elements of surrealism to the narrative.
