Laapataa Ladies At Oscars Memes: Kiran Rao's directorial has been announced as India's official entry to the 97th Academy Awards by the Film Federation of India. The film, featuring Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Sparsh Shrivastav, is a feminist light-hearted satire. The film was pitted against Sandeep Reddy Vanga's directorial Animal, which was accused of being misogynistic and sexist. Owing to Laapataa Ladies nod for the Oscars, social media users have created several memes and posts sharing how the indie film has become the talking point over Animal and other blockbusters.
Kiran Rao X Sandeep Reddy Vanga memes go viral after Laapataa Ladies gets selected at Oscars 2025
While most social media users have celebrated Kiran Rao and the Laapataa Ladies team following the FFI's decision, some have amused themselves with memes and posts. Most of the humour was centred around Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who took indirect digs at the Kiran Rao film on its release. X (formerly Twitter) users chuckled at Kiran Rao having the last laugh in the long row.
A user shared Sandeep Reddy Vanga's fake crying video with the caption, “#LaapataaLadies is India's official entry for the Oscars 2025! 🎉 Excited to see Sandeep Reddy Vanga's vision come to life!” Another equated the reaction of a devastated person with Sandeep Reddy Vanga and wrote, “#LaapataaLadies is India's official entry for Oscars 2025. Sandeep Reddy Vanga RN.” Another mentioned that Vanga might be ‘crying in the corner’ upon knowing that the Kiran Rao directorial has beaten Animal.
Kiran Rao and Sandeep Reddy Vanga exchange in war of words
Recently, in an interview with a media portal, Kiran Rao, without naming any film, mentioned that recent Hindi movies have blurred the lines between ‘stalking and wooing’. She also questioned the depiction of female characters in the movies. Responding to the same, the Animal director told a media portal, “Today morning, my AD showed me an article. It is of the second ex-wife of a superstar. She is saying that films like Bahubaali 2 and Kabir Singh promote misogyny and stalking. I think she does not know the difference between stalking and approaching. When people read these things out of context, they tend to agree. This is entirely wrong.” He also urged Kiran Rao, without naming her, to revisit old films of her ex-husband Aamir Khan like Dil in which his character does much worse than stalking women.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga takes a veiled dig at Kiran Rao
Sandeep Reddy Vanga in a interview with Dainik Bhaskar in February, called out Kiran Rao for certain statements she had made about his 2019 film Kabir Singh. Kabir Singh and Baahubali 2 have been cited by Rao in the past, as specimens of cinema that glorify stalking. Without referring to Rao directly, Vanga has in turn cited examples from the Aamir Khan starrer Dil (1991) and a certain song, both of which are also morally questionable in the same light.
He said, "The second ex-wife of a superstar is saying that Baahubali 2 and Kabir Singh promote misogyny and endorse stalking...I want to tell that woman, go and ask Aamir Khan about the song 'Khambe jaisi khadi hai', what was that? Then come back to me. If you remember Dil, he almost attempts rape, and makes her feel like she has done the wrong thing. And then they fall in love. What was all that?"
