Tanaji Malusare's tale is one of overcoming overwhelming odds with wit, tactics and willpower. When the Treaty of Purandar was signed by the Marathas in 1665, Shivaji Maharaj had to give up the strategically important fort Kondhana to the Mughals. However, giving up such a significant fort to the Marathas greatest enemy was enraging for Shivaji Maharaj's mother, Rajmata Jijabai.

In 1670, Shivaji Maharaj decided to mount an assault on the fort to retake it from the Mughals. To lead the attack, he chose Tanaji Malusare at the advice of his mother. Tanaji left his son's wedding as soon as he received the command from Shivaji Maharaj. This scene is depicted in the trailer for the upcoming film. The movie will also delve a little into the family and background of Tanaji Malusare.

The fort was defended by Udaybhan Rathod at that time, who was a fierce warrior who also led an equally deadly army composed of Rajputs, Arabs and Pathans, all working for the Mughal Empire. Several scenes about Udaybhan Rathod were also seen in the trailer. His character will be played by Saif Ali Khan.

Historical legend says that Tanaji had a tamed monitor lizard named Yashwanti. He tied ropes to this monitor lizard and then made it scale the walls of the fort. Once it reached the top, Tanaji then commanded his men to climb over the fort wall using the ropes that dangled from the lizard. Using this strategy, Tanaji and 300 of his men managed to scale the south side of the fort. Snippets of this strategy were also depicted in the trailer for the film as we see Tanaji and his troops scale the wall of the fort.
As the battle continued, it is said that Tanaji had a legendary battle against the enemy general Udaybhan Rathod. This too is shown in the trailer. We get to see several moments where Ajay Devgn and Saif face off against each other as well as see the two clash their swords in battle.
