official Twitter account of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production house has confirmed that Alia Bhatt will be playing role of Gangubai in upcoming movie Gangubai Kathiawadi. movie is slated to release next year during Eid. Raazi actor also took to her social media account to anunce news. She stated that movie is a special one for her. movie is a biopic of ‘Madam of Kamathipura’, Gangubai Kowali. Who was Gangubai?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed movie- Gangubai Kathiawadi revolves around life of Gangubai Kowali. According to book Queens of Mumbai written by ace journalist Hussain Zaidi, Gangubai Kowali is considered to be matriarch of Kamathipura in Mumbai. She was a powerful woman in 60s. She was a brol owner who also peddled drugs and gave orders for murders. She was also kwn as 'Madam of Kamathipura' for her connections with underworld. She was forced into prostitution by her boyfriend at a very young and she thus had a soft spot for or women who had to go through same fate. She cared for such girls and took care of m like a mor. Many walls in Kamathipura still have her pictures hung on wall.

Gangubai, back in days, was one of most influential pimps in city and had many well-kwn clients. Reportedly, her clients usually had strong connections with underworld. It is reported that she was a guardian of dons. She would give m shelter and also provided guidance whenever needed.  Although she lived in slums of Kamathipura, she was reportedly rich eugh to buy an expensive car for herself. According to some reports,  'Madam of Kamathipura' was only brol owner in 60s to own a black Bentley.

Gangubai ruled over several brols of Kamathipura in Mumbai. She is kwn for efforts she took to improve living conditions in Kamathipura. It is rumoured that she even met Jawahar Lal Nehru and spoke to him about problems of sex workers. Gangubai is one of most remembered women in history of Mumbai.
