America Ferrera's portrayal of Gloria in Barbie has been receiving immense praise for the nuanced sensitivity with which she helps Margot Robbie's stereotypical Barbie understand the trials and tribulations of being a woman in the real world. Gloria in the film is married and has a tween daughter, Sasha. The man playing Gloria's husband in the film, Ryan Piers Williams, is also her real-life husband. Williams is an actor and writer by profession.

The short cameo features Williams twice in the film. One time he can be seen learning Spanish on Duolingo. He next appears for a split second in the final segment of the film alongside Gloria as they drop Barbie off to her doctor's appointment. The couple had recently attended the European premiere of Barbie held in London. Ferrera had posted a picture of the two from the event calling him her "forever Ken". Her caption read, "My favorite & forever Ken, you cute."

America Ferrera was not just a carefully made casting choice for Greta Gerwig's Barbie, but the role had been specifically penned for her by the young director. Gerwig recently shared in an interview how she had been a fan of Ferrera ever since the latter's Ugly Betty days. Barbie is currently running in theatres, worldwide.
