The film was followed by a sequel, "Mortal Kombat Annihilation", which released in 1997.

Reports of the next installment have been around for a long time and several plans to make the movie were announced, but none of them succeeded.

The announcement comes close on the heels of the latest version of the game, ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ that was unveiled recently.

The game has even gone much further than the confines of the home or gaming arena and has turned out to a game played in a tournament in multiple countries.
