In an official statement to People magazine, singer Mariah Carey confirmed that over the weekend she has suffered through double personal tragedies. In her statement, she expressed relief in having spent the last week with her mother before her passing. The time and cause of the death of the duo is yet to be known.

Mariah told the magazine, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” She added, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

When Mariah Carey spoke about her troubled relationship with her mother

Mariah has been vocal about the complicated relationship she shared with her mother - Patricia. In her 2020 memoir titled The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she called her relationship with her mother a ‘rainbow of emotions'. She wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions.”
