Is rift based on a True Story?
rift (2018) is indeed based on a true story. film is an aptation of 1998 book rift: A True Story of Love, Loss and Survival at Sea written by Tami Oldham Ashcraft herself. In September 1983, future looked bright and beaming for Tami Oldham Ashcraft, a 23-year-old American girl. She and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, h been sailing for past six months.
Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp h decided to take a break from sailing in Sharp’s 36-foot sailboat. couple decided to take up job delivering a 44-foot yacht from Tahiti to San Diego. At first, this looked like a pretty good business deal, but it soon turned into most fatal experience of ir lives.

What h happened in rift?
Within first three weeks of ir sail, couple was ambushed by wear. A late-season storm h arrived which turned ir lives upside down. Richard did his best to keep yacht from sinking. But y were soon confronted by 40-foot waves and 140-kt winds, it was clear that y h come face to face with Hurricane Raymond, a category 4 hurricane which was one of largest in Pacific Ocean. As couple desperately fought for ir lives hurricane showed signs of abating.

When Hurricane Raymond hit, Sharp insisted Ashcraft get down below deck as he secured himself with safety harness. But boat capsized, throwing Ashcraft against cabin wall. sailor woke up 27 hours later, only to find that her husband-to-be h gone missing. 23-year-old Tami was left alone after one of worst hurricanes in history.

In her book, Ashcraft revealed that winds were too strong and h yanked her fiance off of boat. Left alone and scared, Ashcraft went through greatest loss of her life in midst of an apocalyptic storm. As she was grabbing on to her own life, she did t even have time to mourn her lost love. In an interview with Chicago Tribune, Tami Oldham Ashcraft revealed that hardest part of it all was losing Richard.

How did Tami survive?
Ashcraft h woken up to an entirely broken, smashed and scattered yacht, cabin was half-full of water. masts were broken and sails were completely waterlogged, floating around uselessly. Ashcraft also discovered that navigation system, and emergency position-indicating rio device, were also broken. Hence, leaving her with means of contacting shores of Hawaii. Alone, scared and terribly injured Tami h to find a way to get to Hawaii. However, what happened in next 41 days is a true testament to human spirit of survival.

Tami used a makeshift sail from a broken pole and me a pump to keep cabin from flooding. She was only left with a sextant, which is a navigational instrument. She also h a watch to help her navigate 1,500 miles to Hilo, Hawaii. But, she was suffering from hunger, a he injury and a severely damd boat. As per book, Tami has kept triangular-shaped sextant to this day and wears it around her neck. It is encrusted with a diamond, as a pendant. She claims that sextant saved her life.
In her interview with Chicago Tribune, Tami explained how she h survived on peanut butter and canned food which ranged from fruit cocktail to sardines for next 41 days. Tami claimed that re was time to grieve, she h to find a way to survive. She reached point of a mental breakdown, but her body could endure far more than mind.
In midst of storm, Tami remained catatonic for two days, as she mourned her fiance and was weakened by her own blood loss. Being along on boat became solitary confinement and she revealed that her inner voice h kept her on track. But, she did reach point of a mental break down.
Tami stated that she took a rifle that was on board, loed it and put it in her mouth. But, something inside of her stopped her from doing so. A few days later, a 300-foot Japanese research ship saw her boat near entrance of harbour. 41 days from when hurricane h struck, she was finally pulled into Big Island’s Hilo Harbour.
